Photographer’s Note

In Chile, when someone dies in a car accident, it is common to build an "animita" next to the spot where the accident happened. It usually consists in a tiny construction (like a tiny chapel, no more than 1m high) and a cross, always decorated with plastic flowers.

In Atacama desert (where this pic was taken), despite the low traffic, animitas are pretty frequent. The reason, according to some locals, is the combination of the monotony of "straight-to-infinity" roads and sleepiness caused by high altitude.

Animitas can be built for reasons other than car accidents, such as public tragedies or violent deaths, even in the cities. Some of them are believed to do miracles, so many people adore them as idols, and put flowers or thank-you notes in case it answers their prayers.
