Photographer’s Note

This is the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. This is the largest Roman Catholic church in the Western Hemisphere, and was dedicated in 1959. Its architecture is mix of Romanesque and Byzantine styles. The Great Upper Church boasts fantastic mosaics, stained glass windows and individual chapels, and the lower level Crypt Church is smaller and darker, but equally impressive in atmosphere and ornamentation.

Impressive details and skillful use of present light!
The warm colours from artificial lighting contrast well with the blues from daylight...
Perfect symmetry in composition, broken only by distant visitors!

This is an amazing shot!
The perspective, the colours, the shapes and the composition are truly breathtaking!
It looks so much better full size than it does thumbnail.

It surprises me that it can be improved but I think Rajeev has a point with his border.

A good exposure allowing to see clearly the rich decoration of the interior of this impressive Basilica! Could have be possible to work more on the perspective, but maybe we would see less details... nonetheless it's a fine picture! colors and sharpness are fine too!

Hi Danilo,
Wide angle coverage, and the luminosity of the shot has covered almost all the corners of the Churuch.
Eyes lit up when they rech the far end.
However I feel, the shot needs a frame......and hence I have tried a workshop for the same.
Without a quality shot.........Workshop has no meaning.

Hello Danilo,

You mentioned that seeing the National Gallery (the Dali and the Doll image) gave you an idea about where to take photographs in the the Washington, DC area. I, in turn, have gotten an idea from this excellent image. Although I've lived for years in and around the area, I have not been inside the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. I intend to follow suite, and take some photographs as you have. Congratulations on your acquisition of the Nikon D300, which I don't think you had when you joined TE. This is a very good shot. In photoshop you could reduce the convergence of the vertical lines resulting from the 10-20 mm superwide angle lens.

You chose for a vertical perspective, it's a spectacular interior shot.
The ceiling is here the great real eye chatcher, a pity for the first part of the ceiling what a splendid painting, you play excellent with light and splendid colours.

The interior decoration is stunningly beautiful. There are so many wonderful details to admire. It's not easy to get the exposure correct in church interiors but you have done a magnificent job. I'm not a big lover of wide angle distortion but straightening this would lose so many details.
