Photographer’s Note
Two "hamals" (= porters for very heavy loads), discussing about the cost of living and work conditions plus life in general while the bearded man, a shopkeeper from the neighbourhood is listening to the debate.
(As I'm using TE as a sort of diary - to rethink about my encounters, I've added another group at the same place in the WS, with a very different light).
(Something that always strikes me in the whole country is that travelling women are often admitted among such groups of men in cafés etc with the best welcoming attitude IMO : they accept our presence completely to the point of forgetting that we are among them).
I was fascinated by this kind of decor in the BG, not dissimilar with many old shops in India ; I find the shelves and the storage in wood on the left like being part of an old painting, also due to the light coming from the open courtyard...
(NB : on the technical side, first I thought that there was not much work to be done here, just to turn down a bit the blue colour but a problem that occurs often and particularly with this one is that the light seems OK with photoshop CS2 but as soon as I save the copy and view it out of the programme, it looks too dark ; do you have the same problem with photoshop ?)

Hello Catherine,
Another interesting and lively picture with good clarity all the way, from the men's clothes and faces to the minor details in the background. It only bothers me a bit that I can't see what they're looking at. They all watch something outside the picture.
You should consider yourself lucky to be admitted to both male and female environments. One area is definitely closed to foreign men.
Although I am a technical novice, I have noted similar problems of different appearances of the pictures in or outside Photoshop. But my experience is that when a picture seems to be perfect in PS it turns out far too pale when I view it out of the programme. So I have to overdo the colours and contrasts quite heavily in PS to achieve the result I want. Very strange.
Best wishes,
Gert

What is rather strange for me is that they accept the presence of Europena Caucasican women and not thier colegues, wifes, daughters or /and friends.... A gooo moment of intimacy that I think was trhilling to share sork.

hi Cath
It is quite amazing that you are able to approach people in discussion and take their photograph. I suppose you really have a good way to handle your way in photography work.
Very interesting part of daily life scene.

Hi Cath, Great shot of these three guys deep in their discussion. They certainly were not paying attention to you taking this shot. On the CS2 cololur question I had a similar problem in that reds appeared more saturated in CS2 than when opened in a browser. I found the following, which has fixed my problem and might help you too.

I find the page a bit hard to follow but the workflow for WWW is the bit that helped. Good luck.
cheers, Steve

So you somehow sneaked upon them and they did not even noticed you, almost like you were invisible. Very genuine moment caught, love the expressions and gestures.
cheers,
CT
ps: I also have the same issue with CS as it renders the images more pinkish purplish than outside the photoshop environment...good tip from Steve.

No idea about the problems of CS2, but i can say that this is a pure "noborders" photo.
The nameless faces of the forgotten Turkish society, presented in the most dramatic light possible. How concentrated they look! And they are not even looking at you. What can be there more interesting than a photographer Catherine? :)
Hugs,

yet another sample of the 'In' photography of a incomparable beauty...
Invisible photographer - Catherine M D. !!!!
It sound funny when you try to apply your very private, very personal yet incredible skills of communicating with the people to 'the women' at large...
No, Cathy... Don't be so humble...
Besides you - there is only a small (very small) egalitarian group of women on TE - being able to produce such outstanding results in the 'intimae' department of journalistic photography...
It's either 'you've got IT - or you have not...That's all !
with tremendous respect

bonjour catherine
c'est inctroyable la lumiere que tu as dans cette photo, elle tombe juste et bien sur es trois visages au differentes expressions.
cela me fait penser a la lumiere qu'on retrouve dans les tableaux de Le Caravage .

An intense array of expressions and faces in the dim lights. I like the way you have composed them and the thick air around them

Excellent !!!
Leurs poses, leurs regards interrogatifs ou dans l'attente de quelque chose, il y a un léger suspens, et en plus, la lumière est très bien maîtrisée, il en résulte une superbe ambiance.
Amitiés, Grazyna.

well, not an easy thing to do - to be among men, in a remote place of istanbul, inside their "cave" of intimacy...being a woman...
i keep admiring you cath for all those unusual visits to those "strange" places...
