Photographer’s Note

Meet our junior apprentice skipper who clearly got distracted from his grandfather's marine navigational lesson.
On route to Mabul Island, off the east cost of Sabah, Malaysia, he quietly observed the skills from the unfazed old man sitting on the bow.
Seafaring is indeed a part of lives, and livelihood of the locals in Semporna.
I wish I had been able to capture how calm and composed this granfather-grandson team was as the waves of the open sea rocked the wooden old vessel -- But my hands were tightly holding the edges, trying not appear stirred. And I guees he should have noticed hues of blue dominating my face as well!

Why does all the beautiful pictures come from Sabah recently??

Nice picture Ewan! You captured the expression of the boy's face well. I wish the grandfather would turn around and show a little of his face.

Very funny your note Ewan.I'm just starting office and Monday Blues and a little laugh reading your note is better than coffee. Thank you. In fact your note is just as important as your photo, in showing Daily Life of this seafaring/coastal hugging people. Keep it up. Your sense of humor could get you a long way into seeing and getting things which is the essence of good photography. It is about capturing what you feel, about your subject.

hi ewan,
this is a very attention grabbing shot of a life people like us aren't accustomed to, the expression on the boy's face shows determination and worries at the same time, you captured that very well indeed.
this picture would be great if some editing were done on it to bring out the colour of the sky and the sea.
good sense of humour on your notes, it made the picture even more lively than it already is, well done!!
