Photographer’s Note
This image was taken at Plumpton Rocks near Harrogate in North Yorkshire. It's an absolutely amazing place that I highly recommend visiting. Described by Queen Mary as "heaven on Earth", the whole place is full of stunning sights including huge rock formations, an enormous lake and acres of woodland.
Walking amongst the rocks, I found this tiny, ruined boat house with an old rowing boat inside (that you'd be very brave to actually take out into the water!).
The shot was incredibly difficult to achieve. The first challenge was actually fitting everything into the frame! I currently only have the 18-70mm kit lens and the boat house is so tiny that I was completely squashed against the wall trying to get a good composition. I setup my tripod and could only just squeeze my head behind the camera to look through the viewfinder!
The next challenge was the exposure. The foreground was really dark but beautiful sunlight was pouring through the arch, which resulted in a very tough balancing act! (I eventually managed to capture the full tonal range using HDR.)
I hope you like the image. Expect more from Plumpton soon!

Hello Tom,
Really good shot. Especially enjoyed your note regarding the trouble you had to go to to get it. I've not used HDR yet, but it certainly helped you deliver a stunning image. Ah, so much to learn, so little time.
Congratulations, big effort.
Cheers
Peter
