Smiling Church Photo

Photographer’s Note

Hi.
Who said religion can’t be humorous. This smiling tower overlooks the town of Skärhamn on west Tjörn. An island connected to Sweden by bridge. The wooden church was built in 1932 after drawings by Axel Forssén. It stands on the top of a small hill, just a stone throw away from the shore. when its dark, a bright light from underneath illuminates the smile. Emanating its happiness 24/7.

My photo didn’t turn out perfect this time. But it was the best I could manage under the conditions. Using 18x optical zoom without tripod and suffering from gloomy weather. But I hope you enjoy this photo anyway and never say that all churches lack humour.

Hej Per,
I have been to Skärhamn many times but I never saw this smiling church. Is the smile for real? Anyway, a fine contribution to TE, it really shows that there can be some humour even in such a building. The picture is slightly tilted but that´s easily fixed.

When did my childhood church start to smile? Very unusual with smiling churches - but my daughter used to draw churches with smiles on and out-stretched arms from the tower, when she was three or four years old. Maybe she has inspired those who made Skärhamn church start smiling. Or maybe the smile comes form heaven - who knows. Very good photo of a very wellknown place!
