Photographer’s Note

The majestic Birla Mandir at Kolkata which towers to a height of 160 feet is a marvel of India's indigenous craftsmanship. This majestic temple built of white marbles is of stupendous dimensions and designed on the pattern of the famous Lingaraj Temple of Bhubaneswar in Orissa. The manner in which the layering and decoration of the temple facades have been done is a pointer to the high degree of skill involved during the construction process. Not only is the temple an architectural marvel in Kolkata's landscape, this temple has experimented with innovative ideas. Episodes from the sacred Hindu scripture - Bhagavad Gita has been pictorially depicted through stone engravings. Sandstone has been used on the exterior of the temple, and marble for the interiors. Traditional artistry, coupled with modern technology, has lent uniqueness to the architecture and this marvellous and imposing structure in white, attracts huge crowds everyday.

The work started way back in 70’s while I was a student of Kolkata University located close by. More than three decades had passed. So many summers, so many springs and so many wrinkles on my face. Hardly did I know then that in the twilight years of my life I have to stay in a seventh floor apartment of a building just opposite to this temple and wake up early each morning hearing the sweet gongs of its bells.

The shot was taken from my balcony in a soft light of one such morning while deeply engrossed in nostalgia.
