Photographer’s Note

The Ch'tis are the people who live in northern french region "Nord pas de Calais" and these people were widely unknown to the rest of the country until last winter the local humorist Dany Boon exploded all french box office records with his movie about the region "Bienvenue chez les ch'tis". To date more than 20 Mio people have seen it (total french population: 60 Mio). The whole country has been hit by a Ch'timania and the small city where the movie has been shot, Bergues, is becoming a major tourist destination.

Bergues was on my way yesterday morning so of course I stopped there too to see how it looks like, it's actually a nice little walled town and on this photo you see the architectural star of the movie, the medieval belfry (rebuilt after its destruction in 1944). you can also see the two major issues when shooting in Ch'tiland, the natural light is not very helpful and the places are invaded by cars. So even though I'd have preferred a wider framing to show more of the nice environnement I did not want to turn this picture in to a car show... Despite these issues the bulding is symbolic enough to officially open my "Nord pas de Calais" gallery today.

The theme of the ch'tis was also governing our TE meeting in Lille, where we of course had a lot of fun and even though the sun was far from tropical it did not rain and we could discover and enjoy this lively city. Thanks a lot to Jean-Pierre for having made it possible, with the essential backstage assistance from BibiTours. Merchi Biloute !

i guess the weather was not the best, and the tower looks a bit tilted to me, may be i havent had my coffee yet that's why, but the architecture is inpressive inded... a big big tower for a small building... interesting...

Un lieu incontournable du Nord maintenant. Tu nous en offres une belle version sur fond de ciel chargé....mais, du coup, tu te prives du post de 20 h avec le p'tit quinquin! Ravi d'avoir fait ta connaissance même si nous n'avons pas eu le temps de beaucoup discuter (j'ai été très frustré de devoir vous quitter si tôt!)
Je guette le prochain meeting!

Je vois que tu as trouvé un moyen de t'occuper afin de ne pas arriver chez ta soeur trop tôt hier matin! ;o)
Comme des millions de Français, tu as donc effectué le pèlerinage vers ce petit village devenu célèbre malgré lui. Ce beffroi est évidemment l'édifice de plus célèbre du coin et je vois qu'ils ont mis des drapeaux pour accueillir les visiteurs étrangers. La lumière ne devait pas être géniale car il me semble distinguer un léger halo autour de la tour qui suggère un peu de PP pour rétablir les contrastes.

Hello jean Yves,

Très belle photo à tous points de vue de ce beffroi célébrissime, sans le son du carillon hélas!
On est un peu à la limite du pays d'opérette.

Peut-être, fut-ce à titre exceptionnel en raison du lieu et de l'évennement, une note en français aurait aidé à une meilleure compréhension de celle-ci, et un meilleur partage de l'enthousiasme de ceux qui ont participé à la rencontre de Lille.

Je vois que tu voulais voir Bergues ! Et bien c'est fait. Nous avions réfléchi a cette possibilité mais il est impossible de faire manger un groupe depuis le succès du film

Hello Jean-Yves,
The leaden sky makes a good foil for the brickwork. The tower looks out of all proportion to the adjacent building, something which is accentuated by the way it spreads out at the top with the four turrets. One wonders how it stays up. Thanks for sharing.

Eh bien, tu n'as pas perdu de temps. Un beffroi tout à fait impressionant dont la partie haute donne l'impression d'être disproportionnée par rapport à la base. Dans tout les cas, une image bien de ce ch'ti coin !

Lousy weather, I see. You did very well with the composition and I don't think the sky detracts a whole lot from the quality. It would still help to warm up the scene a bit by playing with the WB. I also detect red/blue fringing around the top of the tower, which can be mitigated in PP. You seem to have fixed the perspective distortion on Photoshop; I do it myself but I'm no longer so keen on the results. There is nothing like a true PC lens. Regards,

I simply love the textures and hues and the way you have crisply, as always, managed to capture there. The eprspective which highlights the massive size of the building is superb as well

What an amazing architecture! So tiny building and soooooooo huge tower. I have never seen it before. Really great! These cloudy sky gives great background and create climate for this tower.

C'est pour ca que tu nous a faussé compagnie dimanche ;-) tu voulais absolument passer dans ce village devenu maintenant mythique et incontournable...
Le 10-22 doit donner un d'embonpoint au beffroi qui ressemble comme cela à une fusée arrêtée sur son pas de tir.
Je vois que la lumière était aussi bonne qu'à Lille :o)

tiens je ne connais pas ce beffroi, je ne l'ai jamais vu, bizarre, mais le ciel je l'ai déjà vu quelque part, je me rappelle déja plus!!!!!
beau cadrage qui écrase néanmoins la hauteur de ce devenu célébre beffroi,
super content de t'avoir rencontré dommage que le grand nombre de participant n'est parmi de plus discuter, mais a renouveller..........

That tower is well worth documenting. It seems so oversized compared to rest of the building, that it seems to push this corner lower. I guess perspective correction makes it look even bigger, but it's a good choice for that special effect.

What a huge, large, enormous, giant, massive and big tower is that, for that tiny mini cottage at the bottom!
I cannot see your azzure sky around here, yet, no problem, as the tower is already grasping my attention quite a lot. And very sharp indeed...

ps: why are there so little amount of WS from this meeting? we want to see you all...

Une superbe entree en matiere de cette region. La photo est chouette avec ce ciel ombrageux et menacant.
Resserrer le cadrage de la place rend la tour d'autant plus impressionante.

Le GA doit donner un aspect un peu bizarre à ce bâtiment, le beffroi paraît bien massif pour le reste de la construction.
Comme Cédric, je regrette que tu n'ai pas pu associer le son à cette image!!
Bon maintenant que tu connais le coin, faudra revenir pour nous la faire à l'heure bleue!!

An unusual & disproportionately big tower compared to the base ... like that of a cactus plant. Well managed lighting despite the weather. I like the texture of the clock tower. Regards. Latiff.

The belfry certainly has an interesting shape. Vertical framing is fine giving prominence to this landmark, rather than show the surroundings. I look fwd. seeing the film 'Bienvenue chez les ch'tis'. Do I see some blue fringing around the weather 'dragon', though am not sure why!?

La taille de ce beffroi est impressionnante par rapport à sa hauteur et à la taille du bâtiment... Sur la vignette, j'ai d'abord cru à un trucage...

Hehehe, pas mal comme perspective, cette tour a tellement l'Air d'être plus large dans le haut qu'on a l'impression qu'elle est en équilibre instable.
Un minuscule soupçon d'abberation chromatique dans le haut, mais presque pas :)
En revanche je suis pas mal certain qu'il ne s'est pas mis à pleuvoir spontanément en approchant de la région :D
