Photographer’s Note

Cairo has around 400 mosques. From those, about 50 are remarkable for their rich architecture. The big ones seen here are 2 of the most important ones. The mosque of Rifai on the right and Sultan Hassan on the left are built so close as to create a knife-sharp, almost perpetually shadowed canyon bettween them (WS).

Comme je regrette de ne pas avoir visité Le Caire ! grâce à toi, je peux enfin admirer ce trésor architectural qui se mêle aux immeubles contemporains.
Le cadrage est excellent et l'ensemble se regarde avec beaucoup d'intérêt.

These mosques are really massive, one can estimate that from the cars & the people. Like the WS (the canyon as you say). A good shot, with dominating spires & domes. A different view from Cairo my friend.

Está bem interessante, mas dá a sensação que falta ver mais qualquer coisa no lado direito.
O primeiro plano também está um bocado misturado com as mesquitas; mas a cidade é mesmo assim, segundo parece e dizes.

do i see gothic windows on rifai mosque?... interesting... i like the minarets different than the ottoman ones we used to see here in istanbul (also like the ones on the foreground)... good shot reflecting the mood of the city... crowded and dusty may be?...

A ver pelo domo, o interior da esquerda deve fabuloso. As duas janelas têm um desenho muito interessante. Concordas?
Tal como na anterior, o que é muito curioso é a ausencia de outra cor que não seja esse castanho. Muito bonita a tua foto.

Uma atmosfera realmente peculiar. As formas urbanas são realmente surpreendentes com todas essas torres e formas. Sempre que vejo uma fotografia como essa, fico pensando quando te trabalho deu para construir isso tudo.

Olá Ricardo,

Cor monótona e repetitiva, mas é assim culturas diferentes e tu deves ter gozado bastante esta diferença.Fala-se em mesquitas e mais mesquitas então em Portugal igrejas e mais igrejas. Já estive para ir até ao Cairo, não sabia desta poluição (é uma poluição atmosférica devido ao deserto ou é de outra natureza? é que eu tenho asma embora nesta fase totalmente controlada,não sei se será uma boa opção para mim este clima).
O TE é fantástico por nos mostrar de forma independente estas fotos, gosto muito desta.

Joli point de vue sur les moquées du Sultan Hassan et de Al Riffa'I.
La lumière incidente crée un intéressant relief.
J'apprécie beaucoup cette image qui me rappelle de bons souvenirs.
Cependant je constate que la ville où je suis né baigne dans une brume perpetuelle de pollution.

Pour un non fumeur, vivre un jour actuellement au Caire correspond à fumer 2 paquets de cigarettes.

Another great view of this city. The mosque in the foreground looks beautiful with its many towers and domes. What I also like is the hazy skyline in the background. The light is really nice as well. Good photo work and thanks for sharing!

It is necessary to have benchmarks to be found in this city… I will be lost !!! Interesting sight on these mosques. This polluted fog offers an appreciable relief for the photograph but not for health I suppose… Well done Ricardo, thank you.

excelente contraste de arquitecturas, las mezquitas en primer plano captan nuestra atención por sus líneas, sus curvas y la elegante verticalidad de sus minaretes, pero me gusta reconocer al fondo, entre la neblina o la contaminación, la ciudad moderna.
Es un conjunto atractivo y con un gran grafismo, muy bien realizado desde un POV alto impresionante.

I read Jerzy's critique which i found a bit right and a bit too harsh. OK, this one is no different than a mediocre postcard from Cairo, but afterall, you need quite a lot of time in order to dive into the "heart" of the city and capture its soul, especially when you are still new there and still feel yourself as a tourist, who is mostly attracted to the postcard side of the place. This is also how i work when i go somewhere new. You definietly need to see the big picture first, and little by little, you start to get mesmerized by the hidden beauties in it. Therefore, if you find this general urban view interesting, and want to share it with your friends, why not?
If you had posted an "orientalist" street portrait as a first photo from Cairo, i would be upset and would think: "is this the most interesting thing to see in Cairo?"
Therefore, there is no problem for me here. It is helpful for me to learn about the place, ergo, it is a good TE share for me. TFS,

Se não estou enganado, além das duas grandes do meio, mostras pelo menos mais duas: além da pequenina ao centro, a construção do 1º plano tb. parece o pátio de mais uma mesquita, por causa do minarete.
É uma excelente perspectiva e enquadramento. Digo o mesmo em relação ao WS. O Cairo é uma das cidades que gostava de conhecer (as ~36 horas que lá passei com o "rebanho" practicamente nem contam).

No doubt this is an islamic country here, you have a nice collection of domes and minarets in this frame, too bad about the mean light, getting to this pov at night would allow a fantastic view I guess provided there is decent light on the buildings.

impressionante vista destas 2 gigantescas mesquitas com a cidade como fundo e ainda e sempre a nuvem de poluição que a envolve.
Realmente não me parece uma cidade muito apropriada para se viver saudavelmente.
O que nos mostras em WS só confirma que estes 2 'monstros' são mesmo muito grandes e quase que criam um vale entre elas.

Hi Ricardo, you were unlucky with this shot in the sense that the sun casted shadows in front of the monument, lowering the contrast. Your shot is well framed, the subjects well positioned and the shot difficult at the mid noon.

The frame has a wonderful sense of depth, the mosques in front stand out like in 3-D..!
Fine sidelight and excellent details in the architecture, exposed on a dwindling background of smog and haze...

já havia visto fotos de uma destas mesquitas e seus minaretes. Aqui gostei de as ver com a cidade enfumaçada ao fundo. bela vista com luz suave. As cores, assim tão vazias, me fazem pensar numa versão em b&p que daria mais elegância à compo. de qualquer maneira é uma bela imagem, fico imaginando as belezas e horrores que uma cidade como esta deve esconder nos seus recantos.
