Photographer’s Note

This high relief, depicting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, is placed in the wall of the church vestry at St. Michaels Parish Church in Linlithgow. Discovered by a grave digger in the early 20th century, it is believed to date back to the 12th century. It was possibly discarded or hidden around 1559, at the height of the Protestant reformation in Scotland. In that year, the Protestant Lords of the Congregration arrived in Linlithgow to remove all traces of Roman Catholicism, tearing down the statues and altars of the church.

St. Michaels Parish was also the baptism site for Mary, Queen of Scots. More on the history of the church can be found here.
