The cooperative of Akamba handicraft is the bigger in Kenya, well in Africa too. It work with 4000 artists, allowing to give some hours of work to many people. Each of these real artists carve animals, jewel boxes, or masks with traditionnal woods, or noble ones as neem, ebony, or mahogany. If you have occasion to have a trip in Mombassa, ask for visiting this enterprise, people who work there are fabulous.
