The Valley of My Childhood [6]

I was thirteen when I left Gauldalen behind, after living there since I was born… In this series it is my aim to show the diversity and daily life in this area, during all seasons of the year.

This image shows one of the farmers using the harrow to prepare the field after winter. As I have mentioned earlier farming isn’t that important as an economic factor anymore, but important in the sense it is so well visible in the landscape!

During the last 20 years since 1989 the average size of farms in this area has increased by 93%, which means the farms are almost twice as large now as compared to 1989.

The number of livestock has also increased significantly during the same period:
Cows 56%
Sheep 81%
Goats 84%
Pigs 143%
Chicken 216%

The number of farms is during the same 20 years reduced by 49%.

If you hold the number of farms together with average size of farms you will find that the overall farmland has been reduced to some extent during the period but not alarmingly. In addition the farmers get a lot more produce out of each unit of land now as compared with 1989.

Gauldalen is the main valley in the central part of Norway in the county Sør-Trøndelag, and the valley is well over 100 km long, and the river Gaula runs in the valley in the northwest direction from its origin in the mountains around 30-40 km from the Swedish border.

Only apparently random this shot.
The dust's cloud behind the tractor tracks an area following and developing the perspective of tracktor's outline. Terrain and wood share the shot in 1/3-2/3 proportions.
I like it a lot.

Hi, Pablo. The earth looks very dry here. Well, this helped you because this created a dust cloud that floats behind the tractor and makes us aware it is moving. The contrast between the tractor and the ground brings it well out. I think I would have preferred to see the tractor from the front, but this would have deprived you from the dust effect.

It's amazing your apparently facility to take really outstanding pictures. Very good POV, sharpness and colours but, in this case, what I like best is the strong red colour and, also, the cloud of dust left behind. The well written and detailed note is a very good complement too. Happy weekend!

belle photo de ce paysan qui herse son terrain, beau fond de photo constitué de ces nombreux arbres.
Jolies couleurs et bonne netteté de ce tracteur et de sa poussière dégagée par sa herse.
Bonne idée de rendre ainsi homage a ces gens qui travaillent très dures et qui sont des gens généralement fort aimables et serviables, ils n' hésitent pas a donner un coup de main avec leurs tracteurs souvent ( Embourber etc..).

Hello Pablo,

This picture remind me of the summer of '89 when I worked in a ranch not far from Calgary. I had to drive a tractor similar to this one to prepare the soil for planting hay. It was a lot of fun to run around with the tractor but also riding horses afterward...The image is very nice. The tractor look great as a main focal point. Nice colours and details and the cloud of dust lifting behind it and giving the impression of driving at fast speed. Thanks for sharing Pablo.

Excellent farming shot. Ploughing, harrowing and other framing activities could be a wonderful photo subject. Here you show that it could be a really dusty job in a dry spring day. I love the clarity and strong colours of this picture the red colour of the wheel is contrasting perfectly to the to the greyish and brownish soil and trees. TFS and have a nice Sunday evening!

Wow, that's a dry field Pablo, but it provides a good cloud of dust after the tractor, a great contrast between the clean tractor, and its wake. I don't know how close you are standing to take the shot, but the field seems small here, with very close forest around it. I like how the trees come right down to the field. Great clarity in the shot.

Great tractor shot!! I like the dynamic feeling the cloud of dust gives. Tractors have sure improved since we(?) were kids; they now provide a lot of protection to the farmer. Verry interesting note about the increased productivity and the relatively small loss of farmland.

This is what I would say "working in full steam". The dust clouds showed this impression very well and can really portrayed the deligence of the people here. I like the symbolism here and the red provided the little bit of punch to make this scene exciting. Well done!!

My children were so excited by a tractor ride when we went at my grandfather's propety...wich is now sold!
Sometimes thet got down, covered with mud!
This more powerful machine and its trailer of dust over a springlike forest backdrop is quite evocative of good times!

Olá Pablo, wonderful effect from the dust giving some dynamism to the slow tractor - it seems quite modern and brand new, which is diferent from what is seen in Alentejo, Portugal... The red color stands out in such a monochromatic landscape. Nice "action" shot from your valley.

Very interesting note but also your documentary photograph shows, how farmers are working in the field. Very well framed and executed with good light management to produce vibrant colors and high sharpness. It must have been a journey back to your childhood. Very well done
