About 10 km from the Hora of Serifos, lies the most important religious monument of the island, the "Kastromonastiro" (Castlemonastery) of Taxiarxes.

Indeed, it looks like a small castle (check WS 1 for an external view), with very small windows, and only one tiny entrance, which you can cross only bended.

It was built around the 15th century. It looks like a small, fortified village, and it has more than 60 cells. Foreign excersionists of the past centuries, report that there were living around 100 monks in the monastery. It was one of the most important of the whole Aegean Sea.

Nevertheless, on the last decades of the 20th century, it was gradually abandoned. 5 monks were left in 1940, 3 in 1951, 12 in 1961, 2 in 1971, 1 in 1991 and 1 (the abbot) in 2001.

There is an inscription writing the year 1447, on the church of the monastery, but it probably comes fron an older church.

Great B&W version. Excellent lights/shadows controll.
Regards.

Hi Hercules,
Presented and composed wonderfully! Normally straight on photographs are uninteresting, but the way the clouds seem to be converging together at a point behind the church almost gives the impression the monastery is moving!
The birlliant white of the monastery really stands out against the background and surroundings, and although over exposed (deliberately or not?) it creates a supernatural/ purity feel to the image
Love it!

i can only agree with isabela ...your a great photographer
well seen and shot and great conversion in b&w
best regards,anes

Hi dear Hercules my friend,
Again a perfect capture from Kyklades. Perfect pov and amazing compo.

TFS and have a nice weekend
Best regards

When I saw the title I immediately recalled your last comment on my "castle-monastery" in Quedlinburg, here the pov and framing are fantastic with the sky helping the composition a lot...

Cheers

Hi Hercules

A su[erb b&w image, with a good tonal range & excellent contrast & sharpness. Well managed exposure on the highlights. Tfs!

salut hercules

I really like this b&w version, although the color is very nice as well. Good contrast here and lighting. An original pov. TFS

this one reminds me of paraportiani a bit somehow, may be you had a similar shot of it (or may be i had>:P...)
serifos is on my "must-see-island" list because of you mlk... you ll have to pay for the trip just because of that...
good job... as always...

BW is very becoming to this shot. It highlights the architecture. I don't like the foreground, but I guess it was hard to get rid of, wasn't it?

A bit more of contrast, on the sky and on the whity walss. this is the only "critique" that i can do for this image with a great impact, thanks, to the depth of field on the sky and the church in the foregroudn, with a straight geometrical composition and excellent quality too!
thanks, ciao

Hej Hercules,
It's actually good for a change to not having a blue and white greek image but BW in a way it gets less postcardish in that way and maybe it's easier to see the architecture.
good lines of the clouds coming out of the cross on the roof top.
//Anders

Hello Hercules.
This is a powerful image. I find it very poignant how the pure white church shines out from within the rows of empty cells. The clouds streaming across the sky are very important to the impact of the image, contrasting with the solidity of the buildings - like time passing!
Xairetw...Maggie

hi Hercules

I like this B&W tone of the white building placed centrally and in front of the white clouds spreading out. Your pov is well chosen.

tfs, bill

Hello Hercules,
An excellent POV and composition with a good choice of B&W,
Best regards,
Tulay

Hi Hercules ;

Hercules,
the cloud formation is a great one. It seems almost like it is a continuation of the building. Not quite sure if you got this scene at the best light conditions. The building doesn't have any contrasts to provide a better view of its forms. Maybe with the sun closer to the horizon and some shadows profiling the cupula would have been better.

Hello Hercules, good choice for B&W on this one. It gets a misterious mood. Love the clouds that frame the church.
Good job

Hola fiera.

Hi Hercules,
I prefer the version you posted, but the others are very useful to get the right impression of this place. TFS, Christian

Great B&W shot with splendid composition. The atmosphere is amazing and the architectural details are very fine. Great mood, Very well done my friend! Have a nice weekend

Hello Hercules,
This is a beautiful place, beautifully exposed so that you don't have a single area burned with so many white all over the scene, and so the result of this B&W coould only be great.
I like the mvoving look of the clouds here to give some dinamics to the scene and the contrasts of large areas of white with the grey and black tones of the photo.
Well done.
Cheers.

I love the sky in both color and B&W versions! The contrast of the blue against the white in the colored one is simple but gorfeous! The B&W one is full of mystery and art! Thank you for sharing!

Jordi

Hello dear friend,Hercules,

this is a great black and white version,a nice composition you managed, the sky was with you and you captured the scene in a fine moment.
a spiritual atmosphere, too, and the B&W adds to it more.
nicely done!

Nice exposition, Hercules. We can see the details even in the white parts. The sky has nice motion and offers nice contrast. The b&w seems to be a nice option here, even when we love the traditional Greek blue & white!

Extraordinary photo: with the sky and the perspective of the long left wall, it looks like the monastery is in movement! Your POV is really fantastic. Beautiful use of the B/W.
Please have posted in WS the general view of the monastery, it gives a good sight of the place (even if the photo is more traditional!)
Congratulations

Kalispera Hercules.

Mmmmm...

I think i prefer this version than colours, it has a dynamic dual colours and the tight frame just make it more special. Very nice compositions Hercules, i love it. tfs
