There are different steps until you get a shot ready to be a post at TE. The first one is obviously in the field getting the right inspiration to finish the composition and the right light conditions. The next one is sorting out the good ones and bad at home while doing multiple sights on the screen. Once you got through this the post processing starts and at the same time I get to work at a different level of my brain at the text and the title. Latter can be a real torture until I get struck by some idea. In this case here I got the inspiration from one of zmey’s shot.

Fluffiness! Yes, that is what this post is all about … fluffiness in the foreground and fluffiness in the background.

About this shot: Continuing my Painted Hills series. This one was taken at the second morning. This time we devoted our attention not to the main section but the hills placed to the right of it. The portion that you cannot see in my Painted Hills overview. We started when the sun was still hidden behind the mountains and slowly got around these hills here to finally traverse a canyon that gave us real goose bumps. That will come later, first I want to show the moments that we had getting there. Oh, you miss the scale? Do you see the little black vertical line at the right side of the image? That is Steve’s elegant 185cm (6'5") tall figure.

Hi Peter
I am back and I just discovered this series. Really a fantastic place photographed by a real artist. This one is amazing especially by the compo with the grass on the FG.
Really well done
Cheers
JP

Hello Peter,

Yes you did a magnificent job capturing good light in this image. A beautiful place and a well composed image with the little guy on the right creating good scale. I am amazed at this place because of its unusual colours and texture. Thanks Peter.

Roberto

Bonjour Peter

Hello Peter. As it seems, you live in a charmful landscape. You go before the door and get yourself the most beautiful pictures:-)) But fun aside. Also the today's photo is again wonderful. The grass in the foreground and the gentle hills give ease to the picture. Absolutely worth seeing. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hello Peter,

An engaging note, accompanying a very good image of Painted Hills. By including two distinct peaks into the photo, you have achieved the balance of a pair of focal points, like those in an ellipse.

Will you be at the National Geographic Lecture next Tuesday?

Warm regards,

Bulent

It's too bad you can't tell your right from your left because the photo is great. "Little" Steve sure seems to be on the right.
Sorry, couldn't resist teasing. This is a wonderful composition and you obviously took your time to do it right. I will check out the series.
Serge

Hi Peter,
This is elegant. To describes the beauty of nature you meticulously used a nice soft colour tone. The patches of grass add the required contrast with the bare hills. Nice pleasant and cozy mood all around.
Regards
Avishek

This is a fine composition. Great foreground interest and superb and unusual perspective for the Painted Hills.

Recently I was researching info about the John Day Fossil Beds and did not realize that it has a muchricher collection of fossils than I'd previously thought.

Peter

Hello Peter,
Another incredible wild landscape.
Just beautiful.

Hi,Peter,
It's so nice to see something not skyscrapery from America.
I like this open space and the colours in this shot.

Hi Peter,
Beautiful composition with nice soft colors

Hi Peter, technically perfect, a landscape that invites me to a long walk.

Hi Peter,
Those graases look great and add a new aspect to the Painted Hills series. Never been there but they look familiar from another place, Central Plateau in New Zealand. Next to volcanoes, I guess the soil was somewhat similar there. Like Pat described, unable to contain moisture and for that reason very arid.

Hi Peter,
Excellent low POV. Like the other picture you've posted from Painted Hills, you've managed to give us a sense of the place. Now it's easy for me to understand why they're called that way.
Cheers
Marc

Hello Peter!
Another top composition in your gallery!
Nice PP work and lovely place!
Excellent done, again!
Best regards!
Lili

Another excellent shot where you have gone out of your way to find foreground interest, and this time didn't need to use portrait format to fit it into the frame. Interesting how you see "fluffiness" in the background. I take it you mean the gradual toning of the wonderful "Painting" on the hills. Good work
Kath

wonderful landscape, again, the textures are always pleasing my eyes, composition is a winning combinaison with the painted hills and the good looking grass in foreground, TFS

jo

Hi Peter,
A lot of things going on here which makes it almost a study. The grass int he foreground looks very interesting and gives a good foreground detail. Steve in the frame is nice, but not important for me for scaling, while others maybe love to see this. But it are the two big nipples who ateal the show in all their beauty. the look rather soft, but that suits the image well in combination with that slight purple toning in the sky. Using a 0.3 means light in the sky was not at his best i think, but seeing this result i only can say it's good work in composition, exposure and presentation...
Regards, Henk

Hi dear Peter,
Amazing pov ! Very nice colors and nice compo.
I liked the contrast between the softness of the plants and the bright orange color of the rocks at background.
And as allways very nice notes.
Learning the world through photography.
TFS and have a nice weekend

Peter,

Carlos

Captured from a science fiction movie ...
Stunning colours - a very good point of view, beautiful visual.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Peter,

Mark

Hi Peter,
The tussocks of grass work very well as a foreground subject here, their fluffiness the perfect contrast to the soft velvety texture of the hills. Everything is very delicate and understated – the gentle light on the grass, the soft palette of rusty red and yellow earth tones on the hills, the pale blue of they sky – creating a beautiful early morning atmosphere.
I didn’t see the human figure at first, but interestingly it actually made no difference to my sensation of scale, which I think is provided very well by the grass tussocks.
Very nice continuation of the series.
John

Peter, this is a really fine shot with great detail. I think you accomplished your aim with the tufts of grass. I think the bg is a bit washed out but that could be a finction of the small post size. Overall really a fine capture.

hello there, peter

ahhh, now i see what that fluffy talk was all about. good, good. i agree with the concept (even though we both know that grass is not that fluffy in close contact after all...). excellent low POV. that reminder about steve's figure was very useful to comprehend the scale. one thing i don't understand though, pete... i look at the picture, i look at the data... what happened to your polarizer??? ;)) wonderful shot!

warm regards,
kristaps

p.s. 185 cm is NOT 6'5"... it's less than 6'1"... 12 inches in a foot, each inch is 25.4 milimiters.

Well done Peter
Nice light on the grasses. The diagonal lines in the two hills echo the leaning of the grasses.
Phil

At first sight looked to me like another over contrasted scene, but obviously it's not the case. Are those hills really like that? amazing !
Wonderfull colour pattern, and smart composition, all elements pointing from bottom right to upper left.
Fortunatelly small Steve was there to scale the landscape ;)
It's a shame the sky didn't contributed with the photographer.

Hi Peter

Another beautiful shot. I always like the color of your photos. This one has amazing color too. The sand dunes are looking amazing. Good composition and great POV.

Regards,

Lopshang.

Hi Peter, such softness here, yesterday i was talking about the movie U-Turn on your previous shot today i'll like to speak about "into the wild", produced by sean Penn.
This is a classical Peter, a huge level of posting, i just think here there are little parts that are a little bit too white, but just personnal matter don't worry too much ;)

hi Peter,
very nice image, the foreground is simply perfect here!
enjoy the 17-35 :)

Hello Peter,

Funny that at the moment I was opening this picture, I received a phone call from LA and a relative is inviting us ( my wife ) for a week or more in California. Since I am not the style of guy who likes to stay at home more than one one day fo(For courtesy)your pictures of the painted desert and perhaps the Antilope Canyon, and Death Valley or Mono lake, may be
arranged in a tour. I will count on your
suggestions very much dear Peter.
What a good idea to include the grass at the front. The combination is just marvellous.
And the ND filter has done is even more striking.
Keep well - Izzet

Olá Peter,
Wonderful, as expected from a photo of yours in such amazing place.
Without Steve's figure it would be impossible to realize the scale.
This photo seems to have a little bit too much light.
Cumprimentos,

Hi Peter,
I like the fact that the fluffy croppings lean toward the beautifully painted mound in the distance. Tho' easily dismissed by one less experienced than you, these grassy clumps add color and texture to the landscape you present. Great addition to your gallery.
Regards,
Kathy

Hi Peter!

Landscape photography of the highest quality, of course the extraordinary beauty of this place helped a lot, but I don't think that there are many of us that could capture it this way! One of the key points of this photo is the excellent depth of field! Composition is flawless and the colours just brilliant. Very impressive overall definition! Congratulations!

Suc ha nice compsotion with the two hills with so nice colors in the back and the so luminous vegetation in the front. I like it.

Hi, Peter -

I don't know about background fluffiness; in fact, I rather like the contrast between the fluffy foreground and what I see as hard background.

What I also find fascinating is that the plants are bending in the wind - creating a nice diagonal - and yet they almost all look crisp, even at 1/6 second. That was well done! Good diagonal contrast in the hills, too.

I might have painted the white part of the sky a bit, to lower the contrast there, but that is a minor nit.

Best,
Dan

Hi Peter!
It's the second time I see such fluffiness on pictures around TE (not yours).
As usual, it's a beautiful picture! Besides the fluffiness of the "shrubs", I really like the shapes and colors of the hills in the background! Just perfect!
TFS - Congratulations!

Bonsoir,

I'm not sure about "fluffy" but there is a definite softness to this scene. The hills look like blobs of coffee-flavored mousse. The foreground grass tufts, shot in nice light, certainly appear delicate, too. I hope to check out the Painted Hills someday. A bit far for a TE meeting, though!

Small note of pickiness--the sky appears slightly ovesaturated. Regards, Ken.

I Peter.
It took me a long time before coming down to write something, completely riveted to the image.
The harshness of the place softened by the fluffy grasses is well thought. A bit of life in a desert like environement.
Stunning place and stunning photo.
Surprised to see a 3-stop ND grad use here, the sky must have been quite bright when compare to the ground.Good use and result.

Have a good evening,

Hi Peter,
