The St. Petersburg metro or underground or subway or whatever you call it is an impressive piece of engineering. As St. Petersburg is built in the Neva river delta, most of the land is marshland, and they had to dig a minimum of 60 meters deep to hit earth dry enough to construct a subway and get below seveal underground rivers. It is for this reason that you have the impression of spending more time on the escalators going down and later up, than on the trains.
