The Cathedral of Messina is an example of Sicilian Norman architecture, begun under Roger II, consacred in 1197, destroyed in the 1908 earthquake and rebuild; Partly destroyed in 1943 and once more faithfully rebuild. There are two side porches of the 16th century, remarkable for the beauty of their decorations, by Polidoro Caldara da Caravaggio. The interior contains Byzantine mosaics (reconstructed), works by A. Gangini, Goro di Gregorio, J. Del Duca, S. Gullo and the other artists.
The adjoining bell tower features one of the city’s principal features – a clock, reputed to be one of the world’s largest and most complex mechanical timepieces. Daily at noon, a host of gilded automations spring into action
One of the finest fountains of the sixteenth century stands in Piazza del Duomo; the composition is admirable and the coloured marbles are beautifully matched. It was built 1547-53 by Fra' Angelo Montorsoli, a pupil of Michelangelo. The same artist built the Neptune Fountain in the same Piazza.

A indeed this clock is extraordinarily Gae, excellent and great note, maybe a pity for the top of tower, but it's great photo with very nice details.

Don´t be upset with me, Gae.
The Cathedral must be simply remarkable, as well as the place. But you tried to put all the things in the same shot and this usually doesn´t match!
In my opinion you should choose a farther plan to simply frame the building (without «cutting the top...)in one photo. And then take another single shot for the beautiful fountain, for example.
The celebration lights and the building at the left side contribute to spoil the image, turning it in a too much confusing composition.
I´m sure you will improve in a near future, by trying to follow some elementary rules.
Cheers

Bien amicalement.

A photo particularly loaded in "History". Impressive monuments by their beauty. Italy possesses a fabulous patrimony on the architectural plan.
Thank you very much for this very detailed note ( many searches.
I am going to try a small Gae workshop.
Very friendly.

I like the inclusion of the lights and the people in the square. It gets a lot into one shot but it also creates a festival atmosphere here. The work on the clock tower looks impressive. It's just a shame you couldn't get it wide enough to not cut off the top of the tower. But the feel of the place is well captured and the architecture is nicely seen in the church proper. Good job.

Very beautiful cathedral. It's a pitty we dont' see the rest of the tower. The other photo is also very nice and works well togheter. Good light and colors. Very good composition.
