Photographer’s Note
I took this photo in January of 2002 while stationed aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt. We were operating in the Arabian Sea in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
It was released to the public. The caption read: "Squadron and ships company personnel conduct maintenance and equipment checks on the flight deck, while a F-14 “Tomcat” assigned to the "Diamondbacks" of Fighter Squadron One Zero Two (VF-102) launches from one of two steam catapults located on the ships bow. Theodore Roosevelt and her embarked Carrier Air Wing One (CVW-1) are conducting missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom."
The personnel you see here wearing the different color shirts/vests all have different jobs to do. They are seperated in this way so that the "Air Boss" (Person who is in charge of what goes on the flight deck) can make sure the right people are where they are supposed to be at the right time.

Stacey, I love it! That is such a cool picture of the jet taking off. The view is so much different than the Army. Cherish your memories in the Navy after you get out because It's something that not many people will get to experience :0)

Thrilling shot Stacey. This picture shows us something about the difficult circumstances people at aircraft carriers have to work with. Aircraft taking off here, rotating propellers there, missiles being loaded behind you, etc. As an aviation enthousiast I like the pictures of aircraft that have been posted on TE lately, but as a TE-member I am a bit reluctant to applaud the pictures of flying aircraft that don't carry a story that fits with the mission of TE. Yours does! By the way: I regret it very much that the "Turkeys" are being replaced by the Super Hornets... I'm going to miss those F-14s!

Excellent shot. Great composition, all the guys on deck going different ways in a "lets get on with the next one" sort of way. The sharpness of the foreground and blurred plane taking off enhance the sense of movement..Bien fait!

The casual way the guys on the ground is standing and looking while jets pass so close makes this very funny.

Amazing picture... you captured the moment beautifully. The angle of the plane taking-off, its blur, and the movement and position of the people create a very special atmosphere. Great composition.

This is one busy, colorful and dramatic shot of the navy at work, launching a Tomcat. Great accompanying note describing what is going on Stacey. I guess you are an "imbedded" photographer for this carrier.

I'm going back through older pcitures and found this one. A real winner. I like the way the angle of the wings of the plane taking off sort of frames the stuff in the foreground.

Hi Stacey,
What can we mere 'mortals' say about shot like this ;) We can't even get close and in my case I've never seen an aircraft carrier, let alone shoot one :O The long lens help compress the scene for a more dynamic feel. Great timming and colors. TFS!

This is brilliant! I like aviation related images anyway, but the shot of the F-14 with it's afterburners on is an amazing backdrop to the action on deck. My only complaint is that the photo is too small! :)
