St. Efisio is the patron saint of Cagliari, more or less like San Gennaro in Naples. In his honour every year, the first of may, a long procession is organized to which people from every small towns of Sardinia attend dressed with their traditional costumes. A holy feast for everybody and a feast of colours for tourists and photographers.
The statue of the saint is carried in a oxen cart from Cagliari to Nora, ancient Phoenician town conquered by the Romans (about km 30) where the saint was martyrized. There, by the sea shore, that very ancient small church stands. Most likely it was built on the spot of a former pagan temple, but we ignore the exact date of building. The stones were taken from the nearby ruins of Nora. It was rebuilt about in 1089, and then in the XVIII century the original Romanic facade was covered with a ugly loggiato. (And that’s why I photographed it from behind).
Inside it is very dark, there are no windows, like in pagan temples, so one seems to go back in time for 2000 years…

S. Efisio, guerriero romano convertitosi al cristianesimo, è il santo patrono di Cagliari, un po’ come S. Gennaro a Napoli. In suo onore ogni anno, il primo maggio, si fa una lunga processione alla quale partecipano rappresentanti di tutti i paesi della Sardegna col loro costume tradizionale. Una manna per i turisti e i fotografi.
La statua del santo viene portata in un carro a buoi da Cagliari a Nora, città prima punica e poi romana, (a circa 30 km) dove il santo fu martirizzato in epoca imperiale. Qui in riva al mare sorge questa chiesetta molto antica, probabilmente costruita sul luogo di un precedente tempio punico. Non si sa di preciso la data di costruzione, ma si sa che furono utilizzate pietre prese dalle vicine rovine di Nora. La chiesa fu poi ricostruita nel 1089 circa, e quindi nel XVIII vi fu aggiunto un orribile porticato che deturpa la facciata romanica. (E per questo non l’ho fotografata di fronte). Al suo interno, molto buio perché non ha finestre, come nei templi pagani, sembra di tornare indietro di 2000 anni…
