Painted Hills Overlook and Trail, gives a wide-angle view of the color-splashed hummocks and hills which are the eroded remnants of the lower John Day Formation. The weathering of volcanic ash under varying climatic regimes resulted in vividly-hued rock layers of red, pink bronze tan and black. The black soil is lignite that was vegetative matter that grew along the floodplain. The grey coloring is mudstone, siltstone, and shale. The red coloring is laterite soil that formed by floodplain deposits when the area was warm and humid. Here's a close-up of the unusual texture of the soil.

This trip to Eastern Oregon was planned by Steven Warnstaff (Wahclellaspirit) and Peter Boehringer, who recently posted another photo of the Painted Hills as his second anniversary shot

thank you, Pat, for now I know that Peter is as big as the Moon! :) I like a lot how you placed them on the diagonal, it nicely contrasts with the line of the mountains. needless to say, fantastic colours. wanna go there NOW! :)

with best regards,
Kristine

merhaba dear pat
excellent landscape and marvellous interesting colours.perfectly picture and composition.well done.
best regards.

Hi Pat,
Man o' man! I think that I found the granddaddy of all the underrated Trek Earth photographs! At least three other photographers had the good sense to realize what a great photograph that this is! If Kristaps and Kristine like it, that speaks volumes for your image! This is a fantastic scenic and one that would look fabulous as a framed print. The world of photography is 10% ability and 90% "Twilight Zone" when it comes to public opinion sometimes (come to think of it, this landscape has a wonderful "Twilight Zone" feel to it). Marvelous!
Stan

Hi Pat,
The colour of these mountains is absolutely amazing. I had seen Peter's shot. Yours give us a wider angle and I like it a lot too.
A very nice element is the face to face between Peter and the moon.
Regards,
Marianne

Hi Pat

Very beautiful shot. Those hill and its colors are really looking different from this world. Very good composition and good POV.

Regards,

Lopshang.

Hi Pat, beautiful place, you pictured it perfectly, even with the moon up there, the point of view is very good, and the light just great. Well done! chau chau,

Maria

Olá Pat
This would be amazing in a simple composition; with the plus of the moon and Peter, it's an outstanding picture.

Hello Pat,

I like the shadows and colors games in this colored hills. By itself, it should already be a nice photo, but also providing the walker and the moon in the opposite corners, it is bringing new features which make the photo nicer.
Now, I have to plan a travel to this place which seems to evidence attractive landscapes.

Yves.

Hello Patricia,
What happend to the panorama from yesterday? Hope that it was not because of my words to it.
Although the wide stitch was showing more from ther whole area, this one is much better when it comes to light, contrast, color and saturation. All ingredients are inside, even the moon...how much more do you want.
A great shot, very well balanced and a real pleasure for the eye. Peter has to come with something real good to overrule this one..!!!
Have a nice evening, Henk

Hello Pat,

Color changes are stunning on the ridges and you captured the scene perfectly while adding a live model and half moon. Excellent early morning time for great shoot. Tone differences on sky is gorgeous. Congratulations.

Best Regards,

Ertugrul

Hi Pat,
fantastic shot, it looks like a painting!
I've been several times in Oregon but this is an area I've never visited. Well... you just gave me something to seriously think about.
Framing and colors are awesome, Stan is right : this would look fabulous as a framed print!
Have a great day, and thanks for sharing.
See you soon.
Ciao,
Fulvio.

Hi Pat,

Yes, I did see Peter and Steven's postings!! Wonderful place! You're lucky living closeby to a place like this. Very nice.
There's even a very small person visible at the right foreground.
The colours are awesome, but the foreground sharpness could have been a bit sharper. That's pretty shallow f/6.3. Did you really need the 1/160? Well, I don't know. I was just wondering about it.
Thanks for sharing!

Greetings,
Dennis

Hi Patricia!
Great shot of this colorful geological formation.I like the perspective and the contrast with the sky.The moon is a very nice detail in your composition.
Regards,Leo

Hi Pat,
Most unusual geology - amazing actually how the actions of time impact the environment.
The hills are so smooth and rounded, like from other galaxy.
A strange formation indeed and wonderful soft colors.
You play excellent with light and shadows.
Again a wonderful picture with a great composition.

Hi Pat. A treat for the eye- thanks to those gentle contours and harmonious palette. The inclusion of Peter and the moon make it all like a fable of some sort. Nice touch. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Pat,
The vivid blue sky background really brings out the wonderful swirling gold and brown sandstone. Amazing details and sharpness to this high desert beauty. Not what one thinks of when comtiplating Oregon.
Regards, Tom

This hill is humongous in size considering it is painted. The inclusion of Peter here is very important to give a perspective of scale. I can see a bit of noise on the moon maybe you should clone it out in PP, but still an excellent shot.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Pat,
A splendid composition using a perfect POV to create a perfect perspective. The colour of these mountains is very impressive. Excellent image with clarity, wonderful light and a beautiful moon:). Perfect work,
Congrats!
Have a nice day,
Zeynep

Hello Pat,
Overall this is an amazing landscape with fantastic colours and placed Peter on the fg really help us to understand the scale. The moon placed on the best spot and it adds point to the picture but i see the moon looks a little bit strange, it just my opinion. Nonetheless its a well presented picture and i like it alot. Thanks :-)

Just came back from a shot vacation to find this beauty. Great work, Pat! That moon surely adds much to the composition. Kristine's keen observation about the diagonal is a point well-made. One remark would be about the lack of critical sharpness but at 200 KB, it is hard to tell if there is a problem. Best wishes,
Hakan

hi pat
this is fascinating. never see such colorful mountain. it looks like a lion's paw. thanks to peter, we can appreciate the size of the mountain as well....
regards

Hi Pat
Amazing mountains with their colours and shapes. Nice composition with the Moon in the sky.
Have a nice day.

Hello Pat,
Man is small and the landscape is strange...
An elegant composition without fancy elements, great light and wonderful colours...
What more can we ask for..?
greetings,
Pablo -

This is a gorgeous photo. Peter and the moon are the icing on the cake of an already incredible image. The red/orange of the hills and the deep blue color of the sky look really nice together. Great compo too.
Regards,
Ryan

Hi Pat!!
what a wonderful place!! I already noted it in some TE pic, it is so nice to see, so strange.

"Peter & the Moon" sounds exactly like the title of a children's story. :D So what adventures did Peter have with the moon ;D
This is a real beauty. I can't wait to see it for myself. You'll have posted all the best views by then. This is a wonderful shot with some excellent contrasts on the gorgeous rocks. Thanks to Peter we get a good idea of scale and it's smaller than I expected, but no less beautiful. You were lucky with the weather and the position of the moon. Well done

Hello Pat,
excellent the colors of these rock formations. They look to me as a painting with all these fantastic colors. The Nature when it made these rocks had a lot of mirth.A great shot, with the existence of the man to adds life in the scene.Informative your note too.

Regards,Danos

Pat,
there it is - the scale that Henk was requesting! I didn't know that I'm soooo photogenic! The moon really gives that twist ... A perfect capture of this magnificent moment of nature at Painted Hills. A day later, Steve and I got a solitaire antelope at this place! My 200mm wasn't enough to get it. At the end it was about the same size as I'm in this shot, but Steve nailed it with his converter. Let's wait and see!

Hola Pat.
Very interesting hills with such red-bronze colors producing a nice contrast with the blue sky, the presence of the moon is a good add to your wonderful photo. Very good clarity, sharpness and POV.
Well done. TFS.
Cheers.

Hello Pat,

Wow, Peter look tiny in this vast landscape! I always wonder what minerals gave the hills their unusual colours. They certainly look beautiful. This landscape is impressive and the moon and Peter add effective little focal points. Nice diagonals and colour saturation. Thanks Pat.

Hello Pat
Stunning colours of that amazing landscape. Great composition and I appreciate the moon in the sky. Wonderful atmosphere there. Well done!

Hello Pat
Beautiful place...I have seen lots of pictures from the painted hills in this site & am always at awe at nature's work as an artist. The half-moon is the additional twist here, as it shines in the clear blue sky. The angled shot makes it very balanced as well as creates lots of depth. We see Peter in the distance, so small & allows us to guage the size of the landscape. Well done Pat & look fwd. for more shots from the meeting
Best Regards
Angshu

Hi Pat,
I saw a link to this picture on Peter's gallery. What a splendid gift you give to our eyes. The way you've placed the elements of this beautiful composition is very artistic. I like very much these impressive colours.

Hi Pat!
This really seems from another planet! I like the tonalities but also the light and especially that wonderful moon at the top.You even included a person. Very good work!
Don't worry about replies, just hope things are better for you there, at least as good as possible.

Fantsastic place. A picture from another planet. The moon makes it even more unreal.

Oi Pat,
Lindas estas montanhas coloridas parece que foram pintadas a mão , é uma paisagem fantástica de grande beleza natural, bom enquadramento da foto , parabéns!!!
Um abraço Gonçalo

Hi Pat. This shot is a wonderful blend of colours and textures, even the sky has subtle texture all it’s own. Nice to include the moon also as the landscape is pretty much out of this world. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hello Pat,
A great compositional element with the moon! I also took an image as this, but the moon was not as present, great color and angle. Well taken, coulda, shoulda been me, and not that crazy Irishmen... LOL
Steve

Hi Pat. Another wonderful landscape from the Painted Hills. This one of course stands out from the others because of the presence of the moon. I assume from your title that is Peter in the bottom right dutifully providing scale for you :)
Cheers . . . David
