I spent almost half a day with this family : here (in colours), the baby being rocked and the other side of the same living room. There were plenty of young children running everywhere in and outside that house, plus one powerful and happy grandmother, plenty of mothers too... Another way of raising children there, as those women living a very traditional life don't work (not even in the field) and rarely venture outside their neighbourhood (or even, out of their house) - are they happy ? I only saw happy faces in that family, and the children were certainly the most happy... More and more, there are "kindergarden" classes in the schools but the "crèches" are still very rare and non existant in villages - of course, no need of them in this case !

(NB, one question : in the discussion, Isabela tells me that it is a "universal tip" to put the babies asleep : can you confirm this, from where you live ? I only saw this in Turkey, another photo here )

[PS : because there were really too many conflicting reds in this shot, I tried something new but many of you know already that I don't know anything in B&W - What I did here was to start with the "colorize" option in photoshop, then I lightened up the faces, darkened a bit the wall behind, had to smooth the faces (on the coloured version this had not been necessary). Your advice are welcome, I should learn as I have other photos where the colours are disturbing !]

Bonjour, Catherine.

Marc

'Nobody does it better'... If i may recall the title of the song...

Incredible 'inner circle' photography.
Every each of them.

Merhaba Catrherine,
Nice shot in sepia colors.
Even many new instruments and vehicles are invented to rock the babies, this is still the easiest way to sleep the babies. Grandmothers still prefer this way in Turkey.
The stove, the kettle on it and the motifs of the carpets are the complementaries of the composition. Nice daily life shot.
Congratulations!
Sibel

Were they happy because there were a foreing woman with a camera moving around? Are they happy because they have chosen this life after considering some other? Are they happy because they dont know anything else and culture and windows to the outside world are somehow under the control of male and/or tradiction? Your photo and your note makes me ask me some questions that I also asked me at the refugee camp of the Sahara people in Algeria. Ant it´s great a photo could achieve this, to raise questions, because there is such calm in this photo, such a warm... Thanks Cath.

Chere Catherine,,

Amicalement a toi

Branko

hi Cath

This has to be one of the best title I have ever seen in TE. How often we see and experience the family bond but you have made extensive travel and see many different countries, and this one has its own merit to isolate a part of human kind down to family cell.

I always think mothers are great human sacrifices for the care and love of children. Excellent post which makes me think more.

tfs, bill

p/s yes, I believe a simple camera which as Image Stabiliser will work fine too.

Bonjour Catherine!

Wonderfully intimate shot. Sepia adds to the feeling of past time. But the thing is time ceased to move here. Just a scene of utmost universality. You may peep into houses all over the world and find scenes like this one with only some details changed :)).
Best wishes T.

bonsoir Catherine
Pascale

Hi Catherine,
A touchiung scene with the mother and her children, and she has such a loving and content look on her face. I like your sepia conversion, but I tried to do a workshop in black and white, my computer skills are not too great so hope it is okay.
Regards
Wanda

Bonjour Catherine
