Some weeks ago I watched the Roman Polański's film The Pianist* - the true story of the Polish Jewish pianist Władysław Szpilman during the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (מרד גטו ורשה / Powstanie w getcie warszawskim)*.
It recalled me that I got a few pictures when I visited the site and memorials of the Warsaw Ghetto (Getto warszawskie), Poland, including the Umschlagplatz*, the place where the Jews were gathered to be taken to the concentration camps, mostly to Treblinka.
This man, walking at the side of the memorial, may have no relation to the Holocaust (השואה / Ha Shoah*), but his humble and poor looking profile enhanced the feeling of place.
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was the greatest Jewish insurgency during WWII and the first urban mass rebellion against the Nazi occupation of Europe.
The Warsaw Ghetto* was established by the Nazis in 1940. The population of the Ghetto was estimated to be 440,000 people, about 37% of the population of Warsaw, in about 4.5% of the size of city. The ghetto was closed off from the outside world by a wall with armed guards. About 254,000 Ghetto residents were sent to Treblinka and murdered there. Most of the other residents died due to disease, starvation, random killings and during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
This week, on the 27th day of Nisan (May 2) it is observed Holocaust Day (Yom Ha Shoah*). The original proposal was to the 14th of Nisan, the anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising (April 19, 1943), but it was moved to the 27th owing to the Passover celebration.

Howdy Francisco!
Original perspective. Good scene. Mysterious lightness. Fantastic effect. Good capture.

My the souls those who died - help us to survive the insanity of the world.
...................

You are a great human being, Francisco.
You've showed us your compassion to the world's affairs.. To the history of civilization.
Every post of your is just another occasion to talk about our daily life... Our frustrations..
You are teaching us history... You are teaching us the beauty and the misery of our existence.

There are very, very few around like you, dear pal.

Good night. May God bless you...

Ola Francisco,

Nao passei das primeiras cenas deste filme, nao aguentei a violencia e sai do cinema. A sua foto parece ter saido da epoca, ate o himem que passa perto do memorial tem um passo pesado.

Abracos,

Flavia

Ola Francisco,
Somehow the terrorist thing feels leels like a holocaust where people are randomly killed for no reason and our invasion of Iraq has become a holocaust to much of the Iraqi population., Pat

MCV
