Photographer’s Note
While folks don't seem to have trouble with the "no fishing" sign, that "no swimming" appears to be too much to ask. Oh well.
Shadow Lake's not too far from the Sunrise lodge. I stopped by here on my way back down from the Burroughs Mountain trail. The lake is one that can be seen from the trails on the opposite ridge (there's a path that runs along those hills in the background of this photo). When looked at from those trails at higher elevations, Shadow Lake looks like a strange and wondrous oasis. Looked at from ground-level, it's kind of just a lake.
I was here over Labor Day Weekend and was actually surprised by how *few* people had the same idea, especially given the perfect weather on that Sunday. I think getting up to the mountain before noon was key -- the parking lot was full by the time we left in the late afternoon. The views of Rainier from Sunrise are pretty spectacular, but the meadows and ridges are often just as otherworldly.
And no swimming should mean no swimming. You're only a couple miles from the dang lodge, how trashed do you want this poor lake to get...?!
