Photographer’s Note

Just outside of Page, Arizona, the landscape is full of slot canyons, where rainwater has eroded very narrow, deep, long gullies in the sandstone. It's interesting to squeeze through these canyons, but the camera reveals patterns and colours you can't see with the eye. Narrow shafts of sunlight pierce the walls of the canyon creating these beautiful abstract images. To photograph the canyon, you need a tripod and use a very long exposure. Indian guides lead groups of trourists through the canyons and they can point out where the best configurations can be seen. One should not attempt the hike alone because these dry gullies can suddenly fill with water, when there is no rain in sight. Rain higher up in the mountains washes down and sweeps through the desert lowland, causing flash floods that can be dangerous.
