Powder-painted Pavements in Pondicherry Photo

Photographer’s Note

As I ambled along the promenade at Pondicherry I stumbled upon some sort of Kollam-drawing competition. As I understand, Kollams (called Rangiri in the North) are designs drawn in coloured and/or white powders on the doorsteps of homes, outside businesses, or at crossroads. Often designed with a kaleidoscopic symmetry, they can be very simple atomic-like patterns, or large and ornate, like the designs in this competition. Traditionally the white powder used is edible rice flour, to provide sustenance for small creatures.

Hey there,

Great capture of these beautiful pieces of art on the ground. Youve framed it really well, especially the way youve cropped some of the Indian flag at the bottom. Good colors.
