| On a number of occassions, I observed groups of Fijian men fishing in the shallow waters surrounding the island. They always worked in teams, with two men responsible for holding a long net, while the other group member served to divert the fish towards the net. Each time they began by forming a large circle in the shallows. Simultaneously they would all begin to throw rocks towards the center of the circle to stir up the fish. They would then began to run towards one another, slapping the water as they ran, until they reached the same point, at which time the fish had been scared into the nets and they had caught themselves a meal. Due to the diminishing condition of the reefs and the declining fish populations, such fishing is illegal in Fiji, but I find it hard to fault these men for trying to catch themselves dinner. |
