Hello Phil,
A fabulous image of a cluster of aspen trees, that works especially well in black and white. There is Western Artist named Beverly Doolittle, who painted extraordinary watercolors of aspen trees, and Native Americans on horseback riding amidst the trees. An example of camouflage, just like mimicry in nature, where creatures get lost against the background. Take a look at her websiteo and hunt down some of her camouflage art.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hi, Phil -
Not to go to your head or anything, but this looks like an Ansel Adams shot. A lovely pattern and grouping, and B&W is perfect.
But are those aspens, or birches?
Best,
Dan

Hi Phil,
Beautiful graphic effect created by the vertical lines of the trunks of different sizes and brightnesses receding into the depth of the grove. I never tried using B&W slide film (and probably never will now) but the effect is very nice. Must look great projected too.

Hello Phil,
Outstanding work with these aspen trees! I live in Colorado and aspens dominate the deciduous forests in our mountains, so I am quoite familiar with these trres (an aspen forest is considered by many botanists to be one giant organism with all of their interconnecting roots). These trees are tough to process in Photoshop, especially with the sharpening. This is a fantastic image of this aspen grove and I am not surpirsed that you won judges choice at all. Congratulations for a superb job!
Stan
Hi Phil,
Wonderful b&w. You did really well here in scanning and bring it alive in contrast, toning and depth. It could be indeed anywhere, so the location is not really important, the subject however is...i like it.

It sure is a wonderful B&W, Phil.
It doesn't surprise me, as I've seen before what you are capable of in this specific photographic area.
Amazing contrast, Ansel Quality!
And... I love aspens!
Cheers,
Fulvio.

Hi Phil,
I like this shot - I've tried shots like this too but they never seem to work out. Very good comp and I think the black and white, while unusual, works real well. Great work and TFS. Gerald

Phil - A good composition in this shot of tree trunks. Such interetsing textures. I like that the main trunks are very well lit in the right part of the frame.
Cheers!

This is a very graphic image with all those vertical lines repeated over and over. I like the way you composed it with the closer trees placed perfectly on the left third. You have captured excellent detail in the tree trunks and did a great job with the scan. Good work

Excellent shot Phil! The tonality of this is really amazing, and that is what makes this shot interesting. The pattern of the repeated form of the tree trunks is great too, with the lighting showing the curving shapes well. Mesmerizing shot!

Phil,
this kind of image haunts me. I always wanted to get this type of shot and never got the opportunity. Part of the problem is that there are no aspens around where I live. There are no aspens in the desert ... hehehe
Just last year I discovered some places at the eastern side of Sierra Nevada some remote places, but to get there means at least 10 hours drive during autumn, winter and spring while the Tioga Pass is closed. So I still will have to be happy for all those TE members that get it more easily than I do. You got here an image just as I would like to have and that means a lot!

I can see why you won a prize with this shot, Phil. Technically excellent and a 'classic' composition of an aspen grove. You've composed this perfectly in terms of the positioning of the foreground trunks. We usually see these sorts of images in colour, but it works very well in B&W too. Cheers . . . David

It's a nice composition, Phil--I like the fact that the two most prominent trees are not centered. (There's that old rule of thirds, which I think is not always a worthy one to follow, but in this case it works.) It's nice how there are clear layers that get darker as you go back. Regards, Ken.
