[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This mill with the name : "The faithfull watcher",built in 1832, is to be found in Tienhoven and has a special history during the second world war: the miller, Arie van Garderen, made signals with the wings for the persons in hiding in the fields and saved the lives of many people.

Windmills were works of art, and no two mills were alike. Each was individually made rather than mass produced The windmill, which was always referred to a "she" by the miller, usually took the name of the village it served. If not, some descriptive adjective or phrase, as in the case of the side-by-side Jack and Jill mills of Clayton, Sussex, or the miller's name might be used. Although the building of a windmill was carefully planned, until the mill was operating in place, no one could know how effective it would be. Two mills too close together, for example, could set up wind turbulence which would render each ineffective. A windmill was usually built on a mound or a hill to catch the wind but flat areas coudl also be used as long as wind turbulence created by trees, buildings, or other mills could be avoided. Often mounds were built specifically for the placement of a windmill. In addition to grinding, grain, mills served as a power source, but, in areas where there were rivers and streams, water mills took precedence as a power source.

The design and operation of a windmill depended on various characteristics of the wind such as wind speed and changes in wind speed, wind direction and changes in wind direction, wind turbulence, and the height of the wind above the ground. An average windspeed of 15 to 25 miles per hour and a prevailing wind were necessary for operation of a mill. The critical component of a mill's operation was the sails. The force of the wind on the sails caused them to turn and rotate the axle, or windshaft, on which they were set. The brake wheel, located inside the top of the mill, also was attached to the windshaft, and its movement drove the millstones and all other machinery inside the mill.

Mills usually had four sails, but five, six, and eight-sailed mills were also built. The earilest sails were wooden, cloth-covered frames known as common sails. They were light and powerful but had to be stopped for the miller to furl the sails. As windmill design advanced, the cloth sails were replaced with sails with shutters. In 1807, William Cubitt invented a sail which could be adjusted while the sails were turning. The shutters of this sail could be opened and closed automatically and worked like venetian blinds to aid in utilizing the wind. A windmill's sails had to always be square into the "eye of the wind" as the mill was designed and balanced to resist pressure from the front only. If a mill was tail-winded, the cloths or shutters could be blown out, the cap blown off, or the mill itself blown over, often with the miller in it. Because the wind changes, the mill had to be capable of being turned into the wind whatever the direction. This was called "winding the mill." The turning gear was the tail pole, and bodily force was used to effect the turn.

This was not an easy shot with the sun on the right side of the mill, but I was there and I had to take a shot of this famous windmill. I hope you like it.

Hi Jaap,

I'm not sure if you'll be able to understand what I mean, but there is a sense of direction in the clouds, that goes in the same direction of the windmill's blades. So the composition is strong, in part because of that. There is a "visual empowerment" of the windmill, because of the clouds that "frame" it. It looks very "glorified".

Impeccable integration of surrounding elements. Unusual light.

Another very fine painting-like photo. The magnificent sky is the main feature, which we see twice, thanks to the reflection. I like the 'daily life' surroundings, making this very realistic and down to earth. You have wisely resisted any temptation to make this too sharp, it's very well finished in PP. I keep using the word classic to describe your photos, yet it always seems approriate, like in this case. The windmill is presented so well, with the clouds in behind the the reflection in front. The colour and contrast are great as usual - another excellent shot!

wowwwww.... this photography deserves a 10! it is splendid and it is made with an excellent photographic technique.
The composition is perfectly made and very well done, in addition the POV is guessed very right. It surprises the visual effect that produces the mill, that is to say, the spears of the mill seem to move to clouds being created a species of cloudy circle.

Hello Dear Jaap,

I just read your revised Intro Page, and the idea of looking through the view finder and seeing a finished painting resonated with me. One reason I have always admired your works is precisely because I see the possible landscape painting in them. The Dutch sky is one aspect, the ubiquitous windmills are another; the colors and resolution, the composition — they are all in collaboration to produce magnificent paintings. Vermeer would have approved, so would Ruisdael, and Rembrandt himself. The composition with the clouds in this image makes it one of my favorites of all.

Olá Jaap, if you say this was not an easy shot I believe you, but the result is superb, as usual. Wonderful silhoette against the explosion of clouds and beautiful reflection. The green margin is a nice leading line and the sky is very beautiful. Good name for a windmill.

you certainly are the windmill embassador here at TE and with every shot that I see from you with this theme I have the impression that you're getting better. What really stands ou there is the crispness of the clouds in the background and surrounding the windmill is astonishing. This sharpness contrast so well with the blurr of the reflection on the water and divides the image into two distinct portions.

Wat een plaatje!!! Schitterende kleuren, Hollandse wolkenmassa en landschap; kon zo een schilderijtje zijn. Door de wind is er geen perfecte reflectie, maar deze is ook mooi.
