[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Rickshaws are used in countries in Asia, and occasionally elsewhere, as a mode of human-powered transport. 'Drivers' may operate cycle rickshaws, in which a cart is attached to a bicycle, or motorized rickshaws, in which the cart is pulled by a motorcycle. Rickshaws pulled by runners are outlawed in many places, though can still be found in cities like Calcutta (where the Rickshaw driver union resisted prohibition). Rickshaws were invented in Japan at the end of the nineteenth century by a European missionary who had been in Japan. The name derives from the Japanese expression ji riki shaw which means literally 'vehicle propelled by man'. The first rickshaw appeared in India around 1880 on the avenues of Simla. Some 20 years later a few of these vehicles arrived in Calcutta, imported by Chinese traders who used them to transport goods. In 1914 the same Chinese people applied for permission to use them to carry people and it wasn't long before rickshaws were to be found in many metropoli all over south-east Asia.

I was in an autorickshaw (or tuc-tuc as it is known elsewhere in SEA) on the way to Sarnath, the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon.
Other names for cycle rickshaws: cyclo- Cambodia & Vietnam, trishaw- Singapore, becak- Indonesia.

Hi Wanda

Another very good shot of daily life scene of India's. This type or Rikshaws is available almost in india. Note is really very informative and some things is really new for me. I hope you will post some picture of sarnath's also.

best wishes

rajiv

This is a quite interesting rickshaw because of the hight at which the passenger is seated. I have seen many rickshaws in different countries but I do not remember anything like this. Another interesting thing is the way the women are dressed. Usual, women dresses in India are very colourful. Your photo is excellent and provides many details of the daily life in that part of India. For another rickshaw, please have a look in here
António

First I wanna thank you for the well informative note, and after for another good daily life scene.
I like to see the real life of this country and as Antonio I observed the black clothes of the women, very strange,India being well known for colors
All the best

Hello Wanda. An worth seeing everyday life photo. It works alive and dynamically. Everything has the ideal place in this composition. Exemplary. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hi Wanda,

Great shot that has a real life told.
The parda worn women and the rickshaw is placed fine in frame, that makes this an eyecatcher.
These types of rickshaws are not seen in South India. There are many variations in models.. In our place, Kollam, there were many rickshaws early and we used to go to schools in them..Now, they have vanished. Only one or two rickshaws still operate here, and that too, to take kids to schools.
North India has these in many numbers.. especially DELHI.
Funny to have a ride in them..

Salutes for this well written note and for the image.
All the best, dear friend.

Hi Wanda,
Another superb daily life shot with suggestive details, the composition is splendid and the clarity is excellent. Great!
Have a nice weekend
George

Hi Wanda,
A nice image showing local trasnport options and where the convergence of the two groups is interesting. I'd clone the bike wheel and foot part on the left though.
Have a nice day JY

Hoi Wanda,
Groetjes, Henk

Hey Wanda, thats again lovely so Indian. I like your pov and the way you have captured the scene.

Hi Wanda,
Nice composition with very interesting details, the rickshaw crossesing in front of the house with the big tree. The waving rear blind make us feel the wind. Impressive shot!
Have a nice day, Hisashi

Hi Wanda,
This is a common sight but I like the way you have emphasized on the effort of the 'driver', the environment is also great to watch... It's a bit regrettable (for the effect of the photo, I mean) that this man is carrying just one passenger who does not look particularly corpulent, as one can see also those drivers standing up on their pedals with entire families behind them, or very heavy weight...
I feel transported by to India when looking at this photo,
TFS and compliments,
Best regards,
Cath.
