Photographer's Note

Trekking in the hills around Ooty, I passed many groups of Toda tribespeople preparing the land for sowing. As you can see, the steep hillsides are terraced for cultivation. I'm not sure what they'll sow. This area is particularly known for its tea plantations, which we also passed through, but they grow many other crops too. My guide told me that right now it's "the season for English vegetable", and we passed fields of ripening carrots and potatoes. He also seemed to talk a lot about Greenpeace - it was a while before I worked out he was saying "green peas".
