[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
During 2007-2008 we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the of the eruption of the Capelinhos Volcano, in Faial Island, Azores (Açores), Portugal.
The underwater eruption began at 7 AM on September 27, 1957, off the western tip of Faial. It formed a small island that was joined latter to the main island by means of the eruption products: lava, basalt, ash, etc. The activity ended on October 24, 1958.
The Capelinhos Volcano is unique and very important to vulcanologists because it was very closely observed. It began as an underwater volcano and ended up as a land volcano. Capelinhos is an example of how the whole volcanic archipelago of the Azores was born and developed.
The eruption of the Capelinhos Volcano and its outcome destroyed the houses and farms in the parishes of Capelo and Praia do Norte and crops all over the island. The event and its aftermath disrupted the island economy. In the USA the Azorean community used its influence to allow an extraordinary quota of emigrants (the volcano victims); this reduced the island's population by one half in little over a year.
This picture, scanned from a paper print, was taken in 1988, thirty years after the eruption. In foreground there is some of the new land created by the volcano, while the background is mostly the burned old land. If you see the satellite view you can notice that this area, after 50 years, is still dark brown, while the rest of the island is green.
See also a color view of this area and the Capelinhos lighthouse that once stood at the edge of the western tip of Faial Island.
See pictures and read more about the Capelinhos Volcano at www.vulcaodoscapelinhos.org; you can choose Portuguese or English language; click VOLCANO > HISTORY, for an interesting narrative of the 1957-58 events.
In the Rui Simas (ruisimas) photo Capelinhos... you get a good general modern view of the area.

Hallo Francisco!
A very interesting contribution! Thank you for the effort of writing the note and linking the other sources of articles. I didn't know anything about this "young" volcano there - but that's TE- - now I know! ;-)
Greetings from Germany - with a lot of snow!
Frank

Hi Francisco, that's another documentary photo of you which gives an idea about the geologic history of Azores. Really interesting. As far as I know, some parts of the islands have red coloured soil, maybe due to the volcanic characteristics of the region. Thanks for the photo and detailed information. Regards, Tolga

Obrigada,
MCV
