I asked Bulent how he would describe the effect created by the downwash, he said, 'There appear to be two concentric sets of circular wave patterns, interfering constructively and destructively as waves do. In spots where the interference is constructive, the amplitude will be doubled, and where it is destructive, the amplitude will be zero. The behavior also similar to those of sound and light waves. I have no name for it except a loud "Wow!' No more than one would expect from an eminent physicist really.

There’s no doubt that the introduction of the helicopter dramatically changed the face of aviation.

Igor Sikorsky built two in 1909/10 but neither could lift their own weight clear of the ground. He didn’t return to the concept of the helicopter until the 1930’s where in 1939 he built and flew the VS-300, America's first successful helicopter.

The earliest recorded helicopter rescue was on April 25, 1944 by the R-4, Hoverfly, the world's first production helicopter. The pilot, Carter Harmon, rescued the pilot and three passengers of a light plane that had been forced down behind enemy lines in Burma.

On Thursday, November 29, 1945, two men stranded on a grounded oil barge in very heavy weather off Long Island Sound, were in danger of being washed overboard. They were winched to safety into a Sikorsky R5, Dragonfly helicopter piloted by Dmitry ‘Jimmy’ Viner. The rescue was carried out a short distance from the Sikorsky factory in Connecticut. This was the first civilian helicopter rescue, the first to use a rescue hoist and the day the helicopter entered a new age.

The Sikorsky S92 is brimming with technology, it has radar, a moving map, sophisticated satellite communications, a navigation computer, a combined FLIR (forward looking infra red) and video camera, a great anti-icing system, two high speed hoists with 300’ of cable, which give a maximum speed of 325 feet per minute (99m pm) it carries cutting edge medical equipment, and flies at 145nm per hour (268 kph). The helicopter certainly has come a long way in 69 years.

"If a man is in need of rescue, an airplane can come in and throw flowers on him, and that's just about all."
"But a direct lift aircraft could come in and save his life."
,

Helicopter Pioneer Igor Sikorsky 1889-1972

This photograph was taken during a rare occurance of having both our S92 aircraft up at the same time. As you can see the force generated by the rotor blades is considerable.

Hallo Stephen!
I saw this as a thumbnail and I thought - Stephen! I was right! ;-)
Again an incredible dynamic photo with an at the first glance confusing sight. A truly not everyday photo, really great.

Wow, amazing POV ! The contrast is really nice. Your note is also interesting.

Hello Stephen and welcome back. I was missing your excellent chopper images. Your note is very interesting as it give us historical and scientific facts regarding choppers. Very nice effect created by the chopper on the water. The two circular wave patterns add to the dynamics of the scene. The colours as always look great. Is good to see you back and have a Happy Easter Stephen :-)

Amazing shot.Usefull story.
Thanks

Une autre image incroyable !! On a vraiment l'impression que toute l'image est en mouvement !! l'hélico est bien placé est le tout est vraiment bien composé !!
Bravo

Hello Stephen,
An excellent sharp composition well depicting the effect of the rotor blades on the sea below. The exposure is very well managed and the helicopter brings a nice splash of colour to relieve the predominant grey tones. Fine photo work.

seeing this one it just remind me of one movie that i saw few years ago "The guardian"..i remember then i was impress by a scenary just like this one..but i never imagine that is posible a shot like yours :)
congratulation dear Stephen for the composition and for such useful note to complete the shot
thanks sharing
best regards,anes

Hello Stephen,
The effect generated by the helicopter over the sea is very well presented. You had captured a great moment,
Congratulations and best regards,
Tulay

bonjour Stephen,
Ah j'aime beaucoup ces vues prises depuis l'helicoptere, avec le mouvement sur l'eau c'est tres spectaculaire, et ici le fait d'avoir un deuxieme helicoptere au dessous augmente l'effet, excellent !
Bonne journee JY

Hi Stephen, this another stunning shot from your helicopter scene. Regardless of technical quality (which is good) it's the scene itself that makes this shot, for me.
cheers, and have a great weekend
Leon

Hello Stephen.
Like Frank, I thought I recognised the thumbnail as one of your aerial shots before I saw your name.
It's a dynamic shot taken with just the right shutter speed. I presume you have cropped it somewhat, and that has placed the helicopter in a pleasing position slightly towards one corner. The pattern made by the blades in the water looks fantastic.
Regards,
Andrew

hi stephen
I was drawn into this one by the thumbnail and title, and wasn't disappointed: it's an unusual, cleverly taken photo, rich in colors .

best regards
didier

Hi Stephen, that's frightening, the water is so dark and seems to be too strong for human beings. Strong... very strong!

Content de te voir poster la suite de cette belle photo. Un effet encore bien renforcé et la présence de l'hélicoptère donne un très bel impact à cette photo.

Hello Stephen! I am still thinking of No. I after all this time. Can you imagine that? Considering that there is such a flood of photos each day this means a lot :) Simply fascinating how the forces work and how much power a rotor has mixing up the "whole" sea down there. This overview shows the whole danger these people are in with each try to help someone. Although it is a calculated risk I suppose you still never know if your manoeuves work the way you have them planned. This I find comes out of your photo and does not need a lot of words to explain the risks. Excellent ... Barbara.

merhaba dear stephen
excellent picture and excellent composition.well done.
best regards.

Hello Steve,

I reiterate, Wow! This is an extraordinary shot that few will witness in real life. A talented photograph, a very good camera, and a unique vantage point have collaborated in producing this remarkable image. I am flattered that my less than trivial remark has made it into your note, and in bold characters to boot. One just has to contemplate and appreciate. In your note, I particularly appreciated your quote from Sikorsky, who gave Leonardo credit for the idea of the Helicopter. At 12, it seems, he had seen a sketch of Leonardo's drawing for a man-powered aerial screw that had inspired him to develop the machine, which indeed has saved so many lives. It may be too late to get Sikorski's quote into the new book, but if there is anyway to do it, it will be done.

Warm regards, and have a wonderful Easter Weekend,

Bulent

unforgettable vortex I, i see the thumbnail : a new one of Stephen (it's not often !)

hi steve, nice to see another great shot from you , seams such a long time. great view looking down on the chopper. The effect you have captures looks like the inside of a giant scallop shell.

Hi Stephen,
very interesting image with an exact explanation of the patterns made on water surface, which I forgot the minute I finished reading it :-). The colours of that helicopter are contrasting vividly with the steal blue of the ocean.
Bravo

Hi Stephen, the effect it is created looks fantastic, a big luck to be there and to capture it.

Hallo, Stephen.
As everyone says, WOW!
Lovely composition, with the diagonal from bottom left to top right, and helicopter in just the right place relative to the vortex.

Best wishes,

Hi Stephen,

Hi, Stephen. Your photo shows the power of the rotor, which has an impact on the waves under it. I like the contrast very much here, the red anb white of the helicopter standing out very well against the dark colours of the sea. Your note is very interesting. Maybe you could also have mentioned the unlucky rescue of Vincendon and Henry in the Mont Bllanc massif, which really launched air rescue in mountainous regions. I was rescued myself by a helicopter in the Italian Alps and I must say helicopters are an invaluable asset in rescue operations in difficult mountainous terrains.

triple "WOW" to this photo, I don't think the idea of "motion" and "power" would be illustrated much better than this. the dark water, the almost-invisible spinning blades, the explosion of waves - pure pleasure to look at. of course, the unique point of view helps a lot to make this photo truly remarkable. superb work, my compliments.

Work, family... you know. So, I keep trying to visit back the fellows who had visited my photos, but its difficult even in this case. The world of photos we have here is something really huge!
I see your rescue's work as something fantastic for many reasons, and I think I wrote about it before. (I don´t know if you already are retired or not.) So, when this photo shows a little bit from it, I love to see it! It is a very very nice theme, Stephen! For us, this images shows a great adventure, with dangerous details everywhere. Beside it, the photo is very well taken and your POV is just great! Very well done!
Take care!

Wow!
Truly dramatic picture, quite the action shot :)
And yes, very nice interference "moiré" patterns.

Hi Stephen. A rare and very fine photo of this large helicopter in action. The effect on the sea is very interesting and Bulent's comments well spoken. Excellent composition for TrekEarth. TFS. Murray.

Bonjour Stephen
Une image exceptionnelle crée par le mouvement des pales de cet hélicoptère,un juste paramétrage pour une image parfaitement réussie sur le plan technique.Du très bon job photographique.
Bonne journée
