Marvão is a Portuguese town of the District of Portalegre, region Alentejo and subregion of the
High place Alentejo, with next to 600 inhabitants.

For centuries, Marvão goes as by-name ' The nest
of the eagles '. It is not of missing: the town
was raised to more than eight hundred meters high
on one of the summits of the saw of São Mamede, to
six scarce kilometers of the border with Spain. An unassailable mountain of granite separates it from
the vales and the pastures. To come to her it is necessary to climb over tiring curves that are born
to his feet. Once above, the sacrifice will have been worth while. The town of Marvão is medieval, white as the snow, cobbled and irregular, tortuous and steep, protected for a thick line of dark walls in whose corners open to themselves bastions, matacanes and cabins. The intramural houses are decorated by balconies of wrought iron, chimneys alentejanas and picturesque windows manuelinas, supplied well for
the days of the winter cold. Marvão her founded the Arabic. There is the one who thinks that it ordered her to create a commander Saracen of name Marvan, somewhere near the year 770. In Arab, Marvan means softly, lively and agreeably. The History could not find better euphemism to name so beautiful village.
Be as he will be, in 1160, don Afonso Henriques conquered the town for the Christian shields. More than one century later, in 1299, don Dinis ordered
to erect his haughty castle.

The Castle of Marvão yergue on a comb of quartz, to 850 meters of the level of the sea, shutting the medieval town up in his walls. His walls reinforced
by towers, are distributed in defensive concentric lines: the internal line reinforced by two towers
and a turret, dominated by the Tower of Homage, of square plant, which him is attached; the intermediate line crowned by battlements and reinforced by massive towers; the external line constituted by the barbican, wherefrom there departs the fence that wraps the mount and understands the town. The adaptation of this defense at the end of the XVIIth century, convertió to the castle in citadel of the fortitude abaluartada, with loopholes in the roofs, allowing the shot rasante.

Sight from the castle with two of his churches to the fund, that of Santiago of the XIVth century, and that of Santa Maria of the XIIIth century in the first plane.
