One of my favorite urban places is the so called Bay Area. This place is world famous for San Francisco and the Golden Gate. The fog that creeps around the city and its surroundings almost during the whole year is a real photographic challenge, but can also be quite rewarding. I got two moments with Fog is coming in and Dreaming at the Golden Gate.

Finally I can add another city that has the same dramatic fog element, although at a very different country and with completely different urban scenario. During my visit to Istanbul I crossed the Galata Bridge towards the Golden Horn. While I was sitting at the other side and admiring the silhouette of the old city against the late afternoon sun all of the sudden a thick fog came in. I almost felt being in San Francisco, however the Suleiman mosque with its very elegant couple and minarets gave me the right perspective.

About the shot: Usually during my landscape photographing I ALWAYS use ISO 100. During my short stay in Istanbul I had to divert from this rule and got quite often into trouble using high ISO for moments where 100 would have been the correct choice. I just forgot to switch back and worth. So, this shot was against the sun and I was using ISO 400. This was a complete wrong choice. Actually, it wasn’t a choice, but lack of attention to the detail. However, at the end I like the accident. The golden hue and grain in the sky gives an interesting atmosphere. What is your opinion?

Thats fabulous and like a lovely painting with so much mist and lovely ambiance. I always like such work and of course you are a master. The impact of this pastel scenery is perfect.

Hi Peter
I can really compare the improvement of the D300 / D200 camera for 400 ISO. The noise is no longer visible with such a setting with the new CMOS captor. However I really like the way you framed this picture including the mist.
Cheers

Hello Peter,

I don't mind the grain at all. I think it give images a different feel, almost like the images we get in our mind. Very nice point of view with the mosque almost hiding in the fog. Looking up and down the image my eyes are busy looking at the well placed objects. Good perspective and soft colours. Thanks Peter.

Hi Peter,

this photo is fantastic! Captured atmosphere is marvelous, it gives excellent feeling of depth, volume and moisture. This sudden fog appearance is fantastic, I had this experience first in my life just yesterday. Amazing feeling of extreme beauty. You captured it excellently. Simply marvelous!

hi Peter,
a very nice image in the fog and the 4 elements standing out, i like the bird just in the corner.
the picture seems a little soft however; the grain is nice.

Beautiful atmposphere, with the mosquee which comes out from the fog. The boat and the ducks are a very good foreground.
The flying seagull is the perfect touch.

Hello Peter,
I saw many Istanbul silhouettes from this POV, but yours is very interesting. It has a mystic atmosphere and the soft colors are very nice. Grains give an originality to the composition,
Best regards,

Hi Peter, the high ISO setting worked great on this shot to create an atmosphere. Well seen and well executed.

hello Peter,
I like a lot the surreal feeling here, seems like the mosque is built in clouds, and I find the grain emphasises the difference between the upper part of the shot and boat on the water. the birds provide an excellent accent, I particularly like the strong silhouette in the upper left corner, it goes so well with the mood of the photo.
excellent work, my compliments.
with kind regards,
Kristine

Just excellent, Peter, sky is indeed just a bit grainy but the rest is fantastic, especially this framing with the gull, but also the fog with the minarets behind, the boat, the ducks, the vertical progression... really good, compliments for this capture!

Cheers
Alexander

Hi Peter,
Another amazing photo dont mind the grains. It is still beatiful even with them.

Gostei!
Abraço,
Carlos

Hi peter another great shot
I like the fog here and this warm colours
also very good composition and pov
the flying bird and the ducks in the front makes this picture very good

HI Peter
The grain here does give an interesting appeal to the shot, but it's the skilful compo and the presence of the mist which really make this such an attractive image. Even the seagull is perfectly placed and adds life to the shot. A really pleasing juxtapostion of shapes and elements in the frame.

Hello Peter!
Nice texture and beautiful foggy atmosphere!
Good perspective and nice soft colours!

Hi Peter,

I haven't been to either one of these two places, but having seen enough photographs of San Francisco - and seeing the mosque - it's quite obvious we're not near the Golden Gate :-).
I really had to get used to the softness in the foreground. But after a while it grew on me and I like it! The seagull in the top left really balanced the photograph. Very nice.

Greetings,
Dennis

Oi Peter,

Hi Peter,
nothing to worry about at all, I think that´s a great photo! The seagull on the top left gives it the little extra kick, the grainyness is fine, but the colours and the overall mood are simply exciting!

Hi Peter,
Wonderful composition. You managed to get, on the same picture,: the mosque, fog, a seagul and a boat. Sometimes one makes the good choice without knowing it.
Cheers
Marc

I'm of the school of thought that all things have their place, appropriate in some cases but not in others.

We all know that film grain/digital noise are unnatural artifacts introduced artificially into a scene by the instrument of it's capture. We know it isn't real and for that reason alone it should be meticulously removed from landscapes.

But landscape photography is more than just documenting a scene. It is visual art. In the visual arts one principal of good design is texture for adding mood and emotion into a painting, into a sculpture or into a photograph.

"Grain" adds emotion to a scene. 999 times out of 1000 when "grain" is introduced into a scene in error it doesn't work and should be removed.

This image is 1 in 1000.

Hi, Peter -

A really nice shot of the foggy scene, and the placement of the bird at upper left was perfect! A kind of funny balance of the horizontals, but it seems to work. The noise isn't bad, either.

One of the few complaints I have about the Nikon series is that they don't include the ISO in the standard displays; you have to push a button to see what it is. I've ruined a few shots myself by having the wrong ISO setting. Not that this one is ruined at all. :-)

Best,
Dan

Hello Peter,

Hi Peter!
I posted three fog shots from my recent travel .
A fantastic shot from this fscinating town. You were lucky to the the mosqque above the fog and managed a great composition with the ducks in the foreground and the lonely bird in the top corner.
Regards,Leo

hi Peter
pastel tones, each details at the right place, layers respecting rule of thirds, birds on top left and bottom right, the boat entering in the frame, the silhouette of the mosquee, it's incredible how this shot is well balanced, and maybe lucky, if i can say, for such a perfect timing... at the right place, at the right moment ;)

Victor

Hi Peter,
The heavy fog gives this composition a very mysterious feel. The beautiful old mosque peaking through the mist and the birds and boat are other fine elements to this vertical presentation of where east meets west.

Hi Peter, I shot with film only up until about a year ago so I don't have a problem with grain, especially when it adds to a shot in a way like this does. I'm seeing 3 definite zones in your shot, the top "noisy" one with the seagull and mosque is great, the middle one, where all you see is fog is great too, the bottom one with the boat and birds is good. I'm a little surprised that the birds are still soft here, as you shot @ 1/3200 and f16. Anyway, I'm not overly concerned about them either. I do like the balance they provide with the gull on the top. Very nice capture.

Thanks, John

Hello Peter, my yesterday's neighbor :o)
As you wrote, it is very interesting to see that we post quite similar moody pictures at the same time !
This one is very impressive, I like how the noise add to the atmosphere, with the dark tones.
Beautiful,
JB.

Hi Peter, this is a very nice shot and reading your note it permits the watcher to apprehend a little bit more the result. Yes at first sight i noticed grain in sky and i told myself "not Peter's habits !". I think this kind of thing happens to each photographer at least once and i have to say i did the mistake all along a week of vacations in Mexico ... not 400 ISO but 800 ;-) I'm vaccinated now. But the good thing i that you shoot in manual so you handle shutter speed and aperture regarding to iso setting so no problem on overexposure ... just grain.
But yes you are true, in that case that works quite well and i'm convince by the overall result. Mix of old and new aspect of picture, like Turkey is : atemporal.
Very nice.
PS : i use photomatix as HDR software.

Merhaba Peter,
A fantastic composition. Good POV, beautiful soft colors and atmosphere. Very well done.
Best wishes.
Ahmet

Hi Peter,
I noticed the noise as soon as I opened it, but I knew there should be an explanation, so I read your note. I agree that given the composition and light, the noise helps to enhance the atmosphere.
Very good job indeed.
Jorge

Living in the UK and taking photos on walks where a tripod is often not an option, I alter the ISO as often as I alter the aperture. However I still don't pay attention, and often have the setting wrong, so I'm glad I'm not alone ;D
I agree with you this seems to be a happy accident, although I don't think there is any heavy noise. The best bit is definitely the mosque and the seagull detail emerging out of the mist. How kind of Istanbull to make you feel at home like this.

Hello Peter,

This is a very difficult picture for a good critique, but I find the picture very well of division beneath the water with birds and above the towers of the Mosque, with in middle the fog as real eye cather.
Thanks for sharing.

Best regards,

Oh this is good Peter!
Fantastic mood, one of the best presentations of this mosque that i have seen!
The fog is great, but so is the grainy look.
Just beautiful
Harry

Hello Peter -

Regardless of what you did or did not do you managed to capture a very nice image with some drama. I am sure that the ISO had little to do with the quality and IMO the noise is minimal in this image. Well done!

To me the dead give away for a wrong ISO would be the shutter speed, 1/3000 sec at f/16.

Thank you for sharing.

John

I love the accidental grain, but I have complaints about Nikon's poor ISO performance. This isn't even a night shot and it's just ISO 400! I almost always use 200 (D50 doesn't have 100) and at night shots there is still noise even if I use a tripod. I really envy Deniz's high ISO trials. Should we swap our nikons with canon? Or would it be a huge betrayal? )))

Hi Peter.

I'm the 100th!!!!! Excellent atmosphere...too difficult for me. Nice details in the note to improve our pictures...thanks!

Rgs, Oscar

Yeeees the grains!
They are beautiful, aren't they?
And do you know how lucky you were?
I would sell my 50 mm in order to run into such a moment of fog-rush.
The coots, the gull, the boat, Suleymaniye silhouette are superb elements to ornament your fog. Don't complain, this is a masterpiece imho.
Cheers,
Deniz

Hi Peter. Nice catch with the fog over the lower Mosque and far shore. Shame the foreground ducks are a little soft, not enough to ruin the shot though. The grain does add texture to the sky. The lone gull is a bonus also. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Excellent! Not too much of anything and not enough of everything. Just enough to make it into a mystery shot. Great capture with the bird in the sky, the boat, and the structure in the f/g.

Yes, I do agree with you that the grain gives a nice touch to the photo in this case. It is a melancolic shot this one. I have never thought of a conection between Istambul and San Francisco as the one you have mention, but It´s great us far it provide us moments like this one.

Hi Peter,

MAGNIFICIENT SHOT !!!

All the best for this excellent capture..

Hi Peter,
it might be a wrong choice or a lack of attention to the detail but you managed to deliver a beautiful shot, anyway, against all odd.
What I really like is the great mood you managed to bring in; there's a surreal feeling here, given by the mosque almost "floating" in the clouds. Another extra point to the whole lot, I think, is the grain, perfectly used to enhance the overall great feeling with the boat in the fg adding a point of focus. Excellent.
Thanks for sharing it.

So it happens to experienced photographers too...:-). I had this for about most of the time I was in Iceland with my compact...and at 800 ISO. You can imagine the results, especially using the zoom...
It is a picture of mood, of delicacy of the light through the fog, of a quiet atmosphere, I like a lot the subdued tones, the birds, particularly the one flying above..., the water. Elements of the earth, with a hint of human presence through the boat and silhouetted mosquee, a great mix, very attractive; nice hint to SF...

I think the Canon does better at 400 ISO...:-), teasing you, hope you don't mind...

Great shot with that mist in there to eliminate most of the background clutter and leave you with only the mosque on the skyline. Very minimalist and beautiful. I also always forget to return the standard settings after changing them for some special shots - glad to see I'm not the only one!

Show de bola, bro!
Abraço,
Zeca

Hello Peter,

What a spectacular image of Haliç (the Golden Horn)! You've captured the view looking southwest magnificently. I concur with your sentiments about the special mystique that San Francisco and Istanbul share. I cannot recognize the particular bridge. At first I thought it was the Süleymaniye, but it lacks the four minarets. I think that it might be the Rüstem Pasa Mosque.

It was at this very site that Leonardo in 1503 offered to build a single-arch bridge for the Sultan (Beyazit II). The Sultan and his engineers, with clearly no visionaries among them, rejected Leonardo's offer. They probably thought that such a structure would have been impossible. In 2001 the bridge was finally built, scaled down to 1/3 size, in Ås, Norway, in a project spearheaded by artist Vebjorn Sand. I just finished writing about it in my new book, "Leonardo's Universe." If this image had been available a month ago (when my deadline for photos came up), I would have recommended to the National Geographic to contact you about using it in the book. The idea in the book is to integrate world class National Geographic photos with the greatest art in history.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Hi Peter,
I cannot add anything else to what people have already said about your shot..just that the haze looks really nice here and has added to the beauty in a great way. Looks like a painting.
Well done,
Shaeri

Hi Peter,
You have managed this very difficult image well; the grain and almost sepia tones make the ancient mosque seem to be a dream floating in the mist. The gull and boat add the perfect note of reality.

Hi Peter,

an amazing composition, so mystic, such great view across the fog to the mosque behind the sea. It's a pitty the boat on the photo is a plastic one, if it wouldn't be this photo could be an eternal one.

TFS and regards,

Mateja

Olá Peter,
It's no surprise that this one is such a success. It's a good example of how the technical imperfections sometimes don't disallow a great photo. As a matter of fact, I wonder if that grain and noise isn't part of the great charm of it.
Simple, but also for that, a fabulous compo, very, very moody.
As for reminding you SF, I can't understand it so well by looking at it, although the fog also reminds me of your posts of SF. On the other hand, I can't help thinking that you may be right, since many of the images I have seen from SF remind me of Lisboa and Istambul also reminded me a lot Lisboa; and the fact the three places have bridges that are alike is far from being the only reason for that.
Um abraço, José.

Oi Peter,

Magic mood, this one came form the dream-land! Your serie from Turkey is really amazing!

Abracos,

Flavia

Wow this is something that can easily be framed and hung on a wall, the mist hides all the ugly parts. the grain adds a 1950's charm, the bird at the top left corner is perfect. I'm not a B&W fan at all, but this would be just as powerful withouit color.

Hi Peter,
Wonderful golden misty composition.
Great peaceful scenery, very well composed.
TFS,
Corinne

Yes maybe just a little bit noisy on the top but your have a perfect composition with interesting details on the right place and even the bird flying on the left corner make it more special, i like the atmosphere with famous mosque on the bg. Great accidental shot..tfs.

hello peter

fantastic scene. love the fog covering the bank and the vaguely silhouetted minarets. the boat and the birds make the composition just that - perfect. smooth and creamy and well balanced. excellent capture, friend.

warm regards,
kristaps

ps. not that it bothers me to the least in a creamy scene like this, but what i am surprised about is what seems to be lack of sharpness on the boat and the foreground. hmm. at f/16, the DOF should have been alright and at 1/3000 there should be no camera shake issues either.
