The Location

Taken at Castlerigg Stone Circle just east of Keswick in Cumbria. This circle is one of the oldest in Britain and has been dated to about 3200BCE. The cloud-shrouded mountain in the distance is known as Blencathra or Saddleback. I was disturbed to find noticeable damage to the stones from what appeared to be hammer marks and as surprised to see parents allowing their children to climb on them. It'd be nice if we could protect them for future generations.

The Image

I really tried for original images on this visit to Cumbria but I simply had to get to this spot on this day. This marked the only morning during our 8-day stay that there was any sort of interesting sky. The winds were such that the lakes were quite choppy (spoiling reflections) so I drove to Castlerigg Fell and waited for over 40 minutes for the sun to peak up over the cloudy horizon and light the distance fells and the foreground standing stones. Although I was not able to transmit it in the image this had to have been absolutely the coldest morning I have ever photographed in. I could barely see through the viewfinder for my eyes watering from the cold wind.

I also used a .6 ND grad

Cheers!

Bob G.

Hi BOB!
The light is wonderful here and the composition great thanks to your well choosen POV.
The stones of the circle and the horizontal shadows give a good depth to the image and I like these round mountans covered with these soft clouds.
Regards,Leo

To be frank ... il love your picture ... soft curves and beautiful light ! Learning about your country thru such an image is a true pleasure .

Amicalement ,

hi Bob,
very nice, the light is just superb, i guess you wanted to show the shadows, that's why you put the stones almost centered?

Hi Bob, the effort was certainly not wasted on this shot. The light is stunning and the colours simply glow. And the added bonus of those clouds hugging the distant hills is delightful.

Best regards, Roberto

Hi Bob,

Not only do you present some amazing prehistoric monuments, but you show it under exceptional light conditions. Colours are equally outstanding as a direct consequence of your early visit.

The vapourous clouds also bring what it needs to make this image remarkable.

Super shot!

André

The colours are beautiful, and POV and DoF are excellent. The cold of the morning is not immediately obvious, all I can say is thank you for putting up with it.

Hi Bob, Iv missed some stunning shots you have uploaded from your recent trip and I will return. I think my next planned trip may be influenced by your work here. There is a real nice quility to this recent work and I can see you are perfecting your art. Until I upgrade to full sensor DSLR I wont be venturing far. I am off shortly to cyprus and that may be the last shoot with the 400D. Anyhow, excellent result on these standing stones, love the warm tones and extented shadows. Regards Steve..

Hello Bob,

Clouds, reddish mountain ridges and green field are excellently captured. Part of forest and shadow of rocks and their formations, textures are makes your frame richest. Beautiful photo, congratulations.

Hi Bob,
You created another masterpiece and your perserverence in dealing with the difficult weather paid off big time again! This outstanding landscape is simply a marvelous view of the ancient ruins that dot your British landscape. I have been to Stonehenge and Avesbury, but I never heard of thses ancient ruins. The fact that they aren't better protected is really surprising to me. Perhaps your amazing photograph can be instrumental in educating the public about this site. Outstanding!
