This Burmese-Mon style pagoda in Ayutthaya is known as Central Cedi or Wat Phu Khoa Thong. Burmese king Hanthawaddy Bayintnaung is believed to have built that temple in 2112 BE as part of his victory over Thai.
But he had completed only the pedestal part, according to the book of 'Hearsay of Old Inhabitants', before returning to Burma. The Thai King Naresuan later completed the pagoda in 2127 BE by adding Thai Cedi on top of Burmese-Mon pedestal.
Modern military leaders in Burma also enjoy building pagodas in the belief it could prolong their rule. |
