We are looking at the south from the special observatory at 250m of Tokyo Tower, offers a 360-degree view of Tokyo. The famous starfish on also TE, Rainbow Bridge on upper left, and upper of it the lights of several planes of the landing waiting to Tokyo International Airport.
Taken hand-held pushing the front of the lens to the pane, selected the slow shutter speed to make some small flows of the lights of the cars. I intend to use tripod next time because here is not prohibition of tripod use.
By the way Tokyo Tower weighs about 4,000 tons. It is much lighter than the Eiffel Tower, which weighs 7,300 tons.

hello Hisashi :)
starfish it is, the shape and the colour fits perfectly. I like a lot how you have composed the photo, the lights of the cars nicely lead the eye through the shot. and I'm very impressed with the quality - for a handheld shot at 1/2 seconds the sharpness is amazing. excellent work, my compliments.

Surprising photo! On the miniature, I had really believed to see a starfish! It is really crazy all these lit lights and these streets which form tentacles! Seen well!

i agree with Kristine, v sharp for 2 s exp, funny title and nice composition and lighting
randompics (957) 2008-02-19 7:36
beautiful shot. I took a similar shot from 150m observatory deck of Tokyo Tower. But I must admit your picture is much more beautiful than mine. Perhaps due to the additional extra 100m altitude you have got a much better perspective.
sevy (58) 2008-02-19 7:39
Good title, because it is exactly what I was thinking looking to the photo: the shape and the color are the ones of a starfish.
I am impressed you succeeded to get this photo with no tripod: the sharpness is good on this post.
Very good management of the exposure and photo taken exactly at the right time to get an good mixing between the light of the city and the ones of the sky.
atlantida (2323) 2008-02-19 8:15
Haaa great title for a great composition, I like creativity, impressive really, starfish, how did u come up with that:)) Also the details are great, the sharpness, everything is great, but the starfish takes the first place.

what a nice depiction of the cityscape with that pinch of imagination which is the main driving force of a great lensman :)

WOW1 What a view, very good details of the lights, and the "star" is very interesting detail of the photo.
PixelTerror (0) 2008-02-19 10:36
Wow what a nice effect you got here, having these avenues with the red traffic dominant build such a starfish structure is just visually excellent, it's interesting to note the dominant remains red regardless of traffic direction, and you needed the right eye top spot and use this to give that something extra to your dusk picture. Given the distance to your focus point you're not even too penalized by the wide aperture you had to use, at least at TE size. I like your latest night shots a lot and this one is no exception.
Have a nice evening JY
baba_flies (8829) 2008-02-19 10:51
Hello Hisashi! Amazing what amount of traffic moves through these streets and I am a little glad that we are "standing" beside you watching this spectacle from a safe distance. I can see the airplanes landing, there is movement everywhere, wherever you look there is no rest. Fantastic work and the starfish is the winner part in this photo, something I have never seen before. I am impressed. Barbara.

starfish was the word it came to my mind when I saw the thumbnail, only then I noticed it was in your title to. Great composition and I love the colour of the sky in the background repeating the starfish colour.
vincent24 (9060) 2008-02-19 14:30
I like your title, the orange light of the street really look like the starfish color...more red and it could be see as blood in veins...in the heart of the city.
A longer exposure will enhance the"river of light" effect...
lilimih33 (9918) 2008-02-19 15:14
Really great panorama and wonderful colours and light!
Very good point of view!
livinitout (942) 2008-02-19 16:02
Wow that's a cool shot. It's like a starfish Gozilla right back down in Tokyo. Great shot. The wide angle also gives a sense of horizon which is great as well.
worldcitizen (9320) 2008-02-19 16:33
Kawaii desu yo! :-) This is a wonderful view of Tokyo, and very artistic, with the giant starfish in the middle. The exposure is perfect, and we can see the beautiful city lights and also the pastel colors of the sky. It is amazing that the traffic created such a great red pattern.
sonkai (1105) 2008-02-20 16:47
An impressive shot,it's really a beautiful view, and the bigest starfish I've ever seen too...I suppose this is the beat of the city, and if you haven't used tripod here you must be the pulse..,excellent sharpness, congratulations.
doubay (674) 2008-02-21 14:16
Wow! What an impressive shot. I think, the pure urbanism and the unrestrained modernism of Tokyo impress me a lot. One day I have to visit your city.
Burberry1 (6041) 2008-02-22 1:32
I absolutelly LOVE this shot!!!!It looks like a multilighted area a little bit magic, a little bit cosmic!
InasiaJones (31566) 2008-02-22 2:49
I think your the best to shoot the cityscape of your hometown... What a spectacular image!!!
I really like the red trails from the traffic going through the buildings. Your title is so well chosen! Very clever... The gradient in the sky is stunning and mix perfectly with the city lights. Very sharp and detailed photo. Goes straight to my favorites!
Have a nice weekend!

Saw this the other day but ran out of greens. Indeed it does look like a giant Starfish sprawling over the city. Very well seen.
abulafia (4900) 2008-02-28 3:05
Nice one Hisashi!
I believe i have the exact same angle stored on my harddrive somewhere:)
Only your picture appears to have been taken earlier in the day, and also have better colors than mine.
And good luck with the tripod, i remember that i couldn't find a real good place to place it, partly due to the many people pressed up against the glass, but also because you can't get near enough to the window, so the reflections of the light inside was ruining the picture, so i placed the tripod on the handrail bar, and then pressed the lens up against the windows to avoid the reflections.
Very good shot, looking forward to see the next result.
Leilani (1385) 2008-02-29 9:22
What a stunning image. The most unual starfish I have ever seen. Tokyo is on my wishlist of places to visit and scenes like this only increase the desire! Kind Rgds, Leilani

Hello Hisashi. Which for a worth seeing shot, - and which for a high technical quality. Like a Octipus the roads wind themselves by the metropolis. Beautifully and impressing. Best regards, Wolfgang.
euryan (8440) 2008-04-06 14:26
This is one of the best Tokyo shots I've seen. The starfish is so beautifully captured here. The sunset colors seem to match. By pushing the lens against the glass you were able to get a shot with out any glare and very sharp too. Nice work.
lestans (17202) 2008-04-07 7:46
Ohh! What a fantastic urban landscape!! You show us a starfish made with lights! A superb picture, perfect quality and very well composed. Thank you for sharing!

What an amazing photo. Great sharpness and lovely colours are making this photo unusual.
It really looks like a big starfish in the midle of the city.
Exactly like from the American movies ;).

This is the best photo I've seen from Tokyo so far! Here's everything together that I like so much in a photo: lights of a big city, around the blue hour, high perpective, creative composition and all these things in fantastic quality!
I've been to Tokyo in 2004, and although I spent only one and two half days here, it really impressed me that I decided to come back as soon as possible! ((:
TFS, this is one of my favourites!!
jimkilgallon (0) 2009-01-30 18:53
Everyone raves on about the New York skyline, but my friend this is a stunning Tokyo capture, creative to the max, beautiful exposure and colours, I like the warped effect of the skyline and the starfish aint that bad either ;-).
Excellent presentation, into my favs for sure.
