Photographer’s Note
A very simple and ordinary shot. I thought I share a feel of this dear city. The old mercedes taxis, are called "Service Taxis", taking up 4 to 5 passengers that are dropped off individually near their destinations. Cost per passenger is usually 1,000 LP (or liras) equvalent of less than 1$ dollar.
People are very fashionable and enjoy looking nice. They are also diverse, from modern to conservative, only to say how the city is very colourful.
About Beirut:
"Berut" is the Phoenician name of Beirut. Ancient Greeks called it Bayrutus but the name Beirut took precedence over all other historical names.
Beirut is a lovely and lively city, even during war time. The Lebanese have adjusted astonishingly to the hard times, faced by almost every Lebanese generation. Even in short times of stabilities, the Lebanese will start rebuilding amidst all uncertainties.
You need not sleep in this city. There is always something happening. But above all, a walk on the meditteranean coastline is enough to get closer to the soul of this timeless city.
This conflict in Lebanon is complex and is not a one-time conflict. It is associated with historical precedents that have accumulated not only since 1970s or 1950s but also way back. Internal sensitivities, even when managed, are subject to power politics, regional and global. This area of the meditteranean basin is intense in history. At times, trade, the arts and science flourished but in almost every step through time, trajedy unfolded one way or another. But from beneath of every ruble, you can't help but hear the soft whispers of Fairuz, a timeless Lebanese female singer and an icon of Lebanon, always giving hope, even when she touches us with melanchonic lyrics and rythms.

Hi Ian, I love this photo, at first glance it seems like Beirut before the war in the early 70s (or what I imagine it was like), the red frame really spoils it for me though. Lovely note as well, tfs, Betty
