Another foggy day in Istanbul. Looking through the Galata tower from Eminonu.

History of Galata Tower

The galata tower was built in1384it was the highpoint in the city walls of the Genoese colony called Galata

During the first centuries of Ottoman era the Galata tower was occupied by a detachment of Janissaries, the elite corps of the Turkish Army. In the sisteenth century the tower was used to house prisoners of war, who were usualy consigned as galley slaves in the ottoman arsenal at Kasimpasa on the golden horn.

During the reign of Selim 2nd (1566-1574) the Galata Tower was used as an observation point by the renowed Turkish astronomer Takiuddin, who had his main observatory in Pera. In the following century, during the reign of Mustafa 2nd (1695 - 1703) the seyhulislam Feyzulah efendi tried to set up an astronomical observatory in the tower with with the aid of a Jesuit priest, but the effort was cut short when he was killed in 1703.

The Galata Tower was reconstructed on a number of occasions in the Ottoman period, most notably, after a great fire that destroyed much of Galata in 1794 (during the reign of Selim III) and by Mahmut II in 1832. the tower's conical cap was blown off during a storm in 1875, and it was not replaced in the subsequent restoration. The tower was used as a fire- control station until 1964, when it was closed for restoratiom before being opened in 1967 as a tourist attraction. The conical cap was replaced in this restoration, giving the tower much the same appearance as it had in Genoese times, though retaining the changes in fenestration and other structual aspects done in the Ottoman period.

Hi Huseyin, it looks like a mystical kingdom arising through the cloud. A different perspective and must have been great to see. Regards, Jean

Merhaba Huseyin!
A nice view at Galata and a mysterious atmosphere. The skyline between the fog and the clouds looks great and I like the colors.
There Is a lot of noise:I post a workshop ,filtered with "neatimage".It`s freeware ,you can search the net and download it.

Merhaba Huseyin,
this is a specatcular picture with great, mysterious atmosphere - city on the clouds~! the lighting is cool too and I like sea gulls decorating the foreground, adding extra details to this work.
Cheers

Hi,

Merhaba Huseyin,
Very good conditions and timing giving the impression the city is floating on the clouds, the flying birds add dynamism. I agree with Leo about the noise, but to me Neat Image destroys too many details together with the noise, there are two other options called Noise Ninja and Noiseware.
Have a nice day JY

Helo Hüseyin,
Recently I've seen many pictures on TE of Istanbul covered in snow, which was a new experience to me. But this heavy fog is also a novelty. A strange experience and a very good picture. TSF.

Merhaba Huseyin
A wonderful view where the Galata tower & the city scape seems to swim in the fog below. You've also created very nice layers with the cityscape enveloped by the fog & the sky. Good work!

Angshu

Hi Huseyin, very good image!
there is a bit of grain, but you can fix it in PP
very nice composition
i like it!
ciao!
Valeria

Bonjour

Je connaissais cette tour alors qu'elle était encore sur la terre !
C'est une très belle réalisation, bravo
LP

Huseyin,
absolutely beautiful and now that I have been in Istanbul for 4 days I even know what you're showing us here and were you must have been to capture this image. Very good! I had similar luck as you did here with the fog, although I was at the other side taking the shot to the west side of the Golden Horn. I posted it about a month ago. Have a look and I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did enjoy this one here.
Peter

What a once in a lifetime view !

Love the birds against the backdrop of the fog.
