Photographer’s Note

The same place in my "Lonely Sunday" photo...

This time visited with my TE friends Mesut Ilgim, Isabela Sorescu and Anellise Lucu...

Those people and a stray dog are just a conicidence to come together in the cadrage, they look like lost in the labyrinth-like streets of Fener district.

............................

The district of Fener, known to the Byzantines as Fanarion and to the Ottoman Greeks as Fanaraki. The Jews were settled after their expulsion from Spain, enlarging a community which had lived here since Byzantine times. In the 19th century it was famous for its masonry houses with richly decorated interiors in Turkish style and for its taverns. Today it is a dilapidated but quaint area of steep cobbled streets and old stone houses with bay windows, where it is a pleasure to wander around, getting lost and discovering the many historic buildings here.
