Photographer’s Note
Hi Dear TE friends
Last weekend after a pleasant night party I stoped in front of the Tagus River at sunrise to rest a little bit.
I was enjoying the Monument of the Discoveries and I made this picture.
Enjoy it too
In the WS, You can see a view from the top of this tower.
*****
The Monument to the Discoveries was inaugurated in 1960 during celebrations of the 500 year anniversary of the death of the Infant D. Henrique (Henry the Navigator). It evoques the maritime expansion and is designed in the shape of a caravel, showing Henry the Navigator at the prow holding a small caravel, as well as many relevant heroes of Portuguese history (Vasco da Gama, Pedro Álvares Cabral - discoverer of Brazil - Fernão Magalhães - who crossed the Pacific in1520 -, the writer Camões and many others).
Seen from the huge mariners compass this monument fascinates visitors with its impressiveness and its 50 metres height. It is visited by millions of people each year. Cut into the paving stone, the compass (see panel above) was a present from the Republic of South Africa in 1960 and it's best seen from the top of the Monument to the Discoveries, that you can access by elevator located inside the building. The central map, depicting galleons and mermaids, shows the routes of the discoverers in the 15th and 16th centuries.
It is located in Belém, on the bank of the River Tagus, in an unique monumental area and looks particularly dramatic in the light of the late afternoon sun.
******

Ola Aires,
Low contrast gave you lovely soft colors. This is one of the most beautifully presented and exposed photos of the monument in TE i've seen so far. Good note as always. I wonder and want a lot to see this monument one day.

Good timing in that one so that you get the full glow of the monument against the not yet too dark surroundings, you placed it right in the frame so that it looks dynamic rising this way.

Hello Aires,
Indeed the people who led the discovery trips deserve such a monument. Its style and details are very impressive as is its setting. The composition is very good here because the monument placed on the left allow us to see the rest of the scene. Great monumet. I've never seen it before. What a placement! Terryfic. I like this night shot made in the blue hour when sky isn't totally black! Very good framing.

A well managed exposure and I like very much your positioning of the monument. It adds impact seeing it there nice and large on the left compared to the small lights of the skyline in the background. Nicely done.

Unusual pov about that monument and for that originality I do enjoy the compo. And the light management with warm tones vs cold blue one is excellent. Maybe, just the distorsion...

Bonjour Aires,
Superbe!
Bonne journée,

Hola Aires.
Excellent shot of the famous statue, captured with nice color from a very good POV. The clouds are also impressive and enhances the figure of the statue. I think it's the best shot posted in TE of the famous place.
Well done.
Hope you have a nice trip.
Best regards.

Great photo and this great monument was something I missed during my visit to Lisbon (by car all the way from Sweden in 1974). But soon I will visit Lisbon again. The portuguese sure were great discoverers. I saw the copy of the the Bartolomeu Dias ship in Mossel Bay South Africa, and the statue of Magalhaes in Punta Arenas, Southern Chile and Magellans cross, were he got killed, in Cebu, Philippines. So I sure am looking forward to see this monument very soon. TFS!!!

This is a great shot Aires, I had no idea that this was on a pier out into the water. Great lighting but the composition is super.

Paulo

That's quite an interesting monument and your composition is good the way it dwarfs the buildings around the opposite coast.

hello Aires,
absolutely great shot, I think it was a smart decision to wait for the end of the day when the illuminated monument looks particularly effective. I like a lot the contrast between the golden lights and cool blue of the sky in the background, but what I like best is how you have composed the photo, the water in the foreground is such an important element to the story about sea voyages and great discoveries. excellent work and very informative note, thanks :)
with best regards,
Kristine
