Photographer’s Note

Late-Renaissance Town Hal in the city of Krakwo, district of Kazimierz.
In 1335 the settlements around the churches of St. Michael, St. Jacob and St. Laurent received a foundation charter from King Casimir the Great and the new city was named after him. The area of Kazimierz, delimited in the charter, was an irregular quadrangle 900x500 m in size, with the main street called Krakowska. The centre of trade and administration was the Wolnica Square (Plac Wolnica), once 195x195 m in size with a town hall. Until the outbreak of World War II Kazimierz was a predominantly Jewish quarter with a unique atmosphere. All this perished in World War II when the German Nazis killed all the Jewish people.
