Photographer’s Note
This is my new favorite spot to take pictures of the Deschutes River. I've posted earlier shots from Harper Bridge and 10 miles upstream at the Big River Bridge. This is a further 10 miles upstream and few minutes walk from our little cabin. One can spend most of the day floating/paddling approximately 40 miles from State Rec Road Bridge put-in to the last take-out before Dillon Falls. The snowy mountain in the BG is Mt. Bachelor Ski Area, currently covered with 168"/4.3 meters of snow!! Of this, 18"/.5 meters fell in the last 24 hours.
Do Check out the WS, I followed John Munro's instructions exactly and I'm very pleased with the result. It's the first time I've used a layer mask in that fashion and it was really simple!!

Hello Pat -
I can sure see why you like this stretch of the Deschutes as it is beautiful. I like the soft feel of the last light of the day this image brings to us. Technically, everything looks to be where it belongs.
Thank you for sharing.
John
PS - Pat I can not upload a WS from my PC. Try this to open the trees a bit. Copy to new layer (ctrl+J), Shadows and Highlights (65%,20%), add black mask, paint in changes using a soft white brush at about 30% opacity, flatten and save. This opens the trees just a bit as the tree on the extreme left is just a bit too dark, IMO. I painted the whole tree line at least twice and then the tree in question several more times.

hi Pat,
the soft pink tone really works here, it gives the scene beautiful dreamlike quality. I like how the the gently curving river leads the eye towards the snowy mountain, that's exactly what you want in this shot, fascinating contrast with what you describe in your note. but I keep looking at the colours, there's something very "Sunday" about them :) thanks for sharing :)
best,

hello, pat
beautiful and soothing scene. i am not sure, if you have decreased saturation intentionally, but it works well with this evening scene. very nice, thoughtful composition too.
4.5 meters of snow??? wow... it must be POWDER there... while all we got here is ice, rain, and then some more ice... :)
so, any interesting skiing pics this year?
warm regards and TFS

Ho Patricia!
Great POV and nice curves of this river, but I like most the colors. The red tones of the sky and it`s reflections at the water are wonderful and the snowy peak in the distance is a very nice detail.

Hi Patricia
What a pretty place set in such a beautiful light. The tranquille winding river and the pale pink clouds adds so much atmosphere. The snowcapped mountain adds depth by creating a focal point in the background, balancing with the jetty in the foreground. Your pp in the ws works very well, especially lightening up that tree.

Glorious colour in this shot, as the clouds are at just the right angle to catch the morning light. Good positioning too, using the S-curve of the river to good effect. Nicely done!

Lovely view, Pat. No wonder it's your favorite. Colors are amazing. I'm sure it was a unique experience to shoot this photo. You did well opening up the shadows in the WS. I find it easier to do these on Capture NX. Best wishes,

Hi Pat,
A beautiful scenic with a fabulous sky. I would have a hard time figuring out what to do with my time at this spot. Take photos or go fishing. Maybe do both! My three favorite activities are photography, fishing and astronomy (along with listening to music). I would have to delegate my time for these activities here very carefully here or I would never get any rest! I used to work with John Munro and he really is an excellent photographer and his knowledge of Photoshop is outstanding. We don't share the same tastes in NFL football teams though. He is a Raiders fan and I am a Broncos fan. Beautiful job!

Hi Pat
I did check the WS & yes the difference especially on the trees is noticeable....and you say you've stagnated? No way. I have never used layer mask before, would be worth a try. Coming back to the picture...the colours are sublime & glorious. Love the view of the snow mountain in the BG. Mountain Sheep Bridge…like the name. Excellent work Pat

Hi Pat,
I can see why this has become your favourite spot for photography! It would be my favourite spot as well if I'd be living closer-by. You're one lucky guy, having a cabin in such a wonderful location!
I first felt there was no difference between the workshop and the main posting, but the thing is that the WS-link in your note is going back to the main photograph. :-) Going to the workshop itself I do see the difference and it does open up the trees nicely.
Thanks for sharing!

absolute magic! The lihgt conditions rendered wonderful colors and almost any composition would be looking beautiful, but with that gorgeous landscape and the snow capped mountain hidding in the back it got even better. A great shot - true landscape photography at its best!

Hi Pat. I can understand your love for this place, looks very special just from a photo. I’ll bet the whole experience with sound and smell would only improve the feeling. Wonderful photo and neat WS. I love the way you have composed with the S bend in the river to lead the eye into the scene and then discover Mt Bachelor in the BG. Wonderful evening light also. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

All your recent posts from home have wonderful early light. You demonstrate so well the necessity to get out of bed on a morning. Here you have captured the early mood perfectly. The peak of Mt Bachelor adds some extra interest and the silky water due to the slow shutter speed is beautiful. Good work

Hello Pat,
Amazing light over Deschutes River this morning!
A well balanced composition with the river as an effective lead-in, directing my view to the snow covered volcanic cone in the background...
Seems like a nice place to take out the flyfishing rod..!
