The backwaters are unique in Kerala and are found nowhere else in the world. Backwaters are a network of lakes, canals and estuaries and deltas of forty-four rivers that drain into the Arabian sea. The backwaters of Kerala are a self supporting eco-system teeming with aquatic life. The canals connect the villages together and are still used for local transport. Over 900 km of this labyrinthine water world is navigable.
The most exciting thing on the backwaters of Kerala, however, is the Kettuvallam (traditional houseboat), which has become the most popular tourism product in India today.
The Houseboats are big country crafts, measuring up to 80 feet in length. Once these boats ruled the backwaters, poled along by one or two men, heavily loaded with rice, coconut and other commodities.
Today these crafts have been adapted into luxuriously furnished houseboats. A Kettuvallam usually has one or two bath attached rooms, an open lounge, deck, kitchenette and a crew comprising two oarsmen and a cook. Traditional lanterns are used as lights. The houseboating is not so cheap, but a very pleasant experience, worth for every cents, really.

Hello,
That's a beautifull and really interresting shot. I like the sharpness of this houseboat under coconuttrees. We can see a lot of details on the boat and around making us feel the atmosphere as if we were there. The note is very instructive.
Good job,
Claude.

A true natural view of Kerala. TFS

Szia Jani!
