Photographer’s Note

This is a photo of the Great Wall of China at Huang Hua. (Around 80 kms north of Beijing) This part of the wall is currently not too touristy, as the wall is in ruins in places and is a little difficult to get to.

The Great Wall was built in many different stages. Over the years, as it started to get old and worn, the Chinese would simply add new layers of brick and rock over top of the old wall. It is kind of neat to travel to these parts of the wall that haven't been rebuilt, because you can see the older layers of wall underneath some of the new rock that has broken loose.

If you look at this photo closely underneath the peak of the mountain that is closest, you can see a trail zigzagging down the mountain. I'm fairly sure that the government is going to resore this entire section of the wall for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and this little trail is there to get supplies to the top easily.

As you look to the distance, the wall goes over the peak of every mountain as far as the eye can see, so I do not envy the workers that are going to have to restore this section!
