Photographer’s Note

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Amiens (French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens), or simply Amiens Cathedral, is the tallest complete cathedral in France, with the greatest interior volume (estimated at 200,000 m³). The vaults of the nave are 42.30 m high, the tallest nave vaults in France. This monumental cathedral is located in Amiens, the chief city of Picardy, in the Somme River valley a little over 100 kilometers north of Paris.
The west front of the cathedral, (illustration, right) built in a single campaign, 1220-36, shows an unusual degree of artistic unity: its lower tier with three vast deep porches is capped with the gallery of twenty-two over lifesize kings, which stretches across the entire façade beneath the rose window. Above the rose window there is an open arcade, the galerie des sonneurs. Flanking the nave, the two towers were built without close regard to the former design, the south tower being finished in 1366, the north one, reaching higher, in 1406.
The paucity of documentation concerning the construction of the Gothic cathedral may be in part the result of fires that destroyed the chapter archives in 1218 and again in 1258—a fire that damaged the cathedral itself. Bishop Evrard de Fouilly initiated work on the cathedral in 1220. Robert de Luzarches was the architect until 1228, and was followed by Thomas de Cormont until 1258. His son, Renaud de Cormont, acted as the architect until 1288. The chronicle of Corbie gives a completion date for the cathedral of 1266. Finishing works continued, however. Its floors are covered with a number of designs, such as the swastika. The labyrinth was installed in 1288. Numerous sculptures can be viewed at this cathedral. The cathedral contains the alleged head of John the Baptist, a relic brought from Constantinople by Wallon de Sarton as he was returning from the Fourth Crusade.
Statues of saints in the portal of the cathedral have been identified as the locally venerated Saints Victoricus and Gentian, Saint Domitius, Saint Ulphia, and Saint Fermin.
Notre-Dame d'Amiens has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. A Son et lumière presentation illuminates its façade on summer evenings and at New Year's, approximating the original painted colors of its sculptures.

Salut Jean François,
Incroyable photo. Pour moi la dentelle gothique se situait dans la sculpture, mais là il y a en plus la transparence. Le jour qui perce au-travers des baie jumelées (je crois que ça s'appelle comme ça! ) enfin... les ogives à droite et à gauche de la rosace sont extraordinaire. Ton angle de vue est absolument parfait!

When I was here I was very surprised with beauty of this building. I could stay watching it for many time and I obligated me to go away cause I wanted to see other things around. Your image give us whole cathedral. Good pov and light

This is really great works that stitching 12 frames. Excellent. I was thinking how you captured this huge and beautiful facade in full details then remembered to read your note then I saw same couple there again too ;) Great works. I like it.

Heureusement que la place est piétone, j'apprécie beaucoup.
Le stitch est parfaitement travaillé, peut-être un cadre moins épais pour avoir une plus grande image.
Je me suis permis un WS pour donner des tons plus chauds et pour la dominante cyan sur le ciel qui me semble pas très naturelle.

Impressionnant boulot d'assemblage, bravo.
Les détails que ce soit sur les tympans, ou la rosace, sont merveilleux.
Je pense que j'aurais par contre recadré un peu pour accentuer le vertige que la cathédrale procure quand on est à son pied, en coupant la première ligne des bâtiments modernes de droite. En gardant ceux du fond, l'échelle sera conservée. Je te propose juste mon crop en WS.

Je n'ai jamais mis les pieds a Amiens mais je vois que leur papagolfade ne manque pas d'interet ! Je vois aussi que tu maitrises bien la technique de la Didiade qui t'a permis ce tres bon assemblage.

Quel superbe assemblage! Il nous permet d'admirer tous les détails de cette dentelle gothique qui est une merveille architecturale. La luminosité sur la cathédrale est exceptionnelle et même la petite surexposition des nuages ne gâche pas notre grand plaisir à admirer ce chef d'oeuvre et ta magnifique photo.

Bonjour Jean-François,
Impressionnante cette cathédrale, tant par la beauté de son architecture que par sa taille et les quelques personnes qui déambule sur le parvis confirment bien ce que tu décris dans ta note. Quant à la photo, je constate que la technique d'assemblage n'a plus de secret pour toi. C'est très bien fait et le redressement de l'ensemble aussi. Le seul petit bémol est le ciel un peu blanc sur la droit, mais ce n'est pas grand chose.

le montage donne un résultat curieux avec une improbable perspective... Mais c'est amusant.

Les immeubles en constructions tout contre la cathédrale sur la gauche me font enrager!!! C'est incroyable que ce soit permis...

I am impressed by the quality of your shot - there is no deformation, I have read that it is 12 pictures in one, but the stitching is invisible. What program do you use?

What an incredible shot, it must have been hard doing panorama of 12 pictures! This is truly a piece of architectue work, fine details expressed, beautiful perspective with perfect proportion!
