Photographer’s Note
Mausolée Habib Bourguiba
Displayed here is the central portion of the mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the first president of Tunisia and responsible for its independence. The eye catchers here are of course the domes, but the ornamented way the vernacular architecture of the southern parts of the Med is represented in the lower part, the light coloured box type structure, is fascinating too.
Captured during a Tunisia trek in October 1993.
Habib Bourguiba was born in 1903 and was Sorbonne-educated. His involvement to separate Tunisia from France led to his detainment and exile in 1939. He returned in 1949 and formed the Neo-Destour Party to continue his efforts for separation. After complex internal dynamics, involving a period of hybrid Tunisian-French rule, Tunisia gained its independence on March 20, 1956 with Bourguiba as prime minister. He became the prime mover in the modernization of the Tusenian state which amongst other things brought a collectivist experiment in the sixties and the granting of modern civil rights to women. In 1975 he was appointed life long president. During large parts of his rules he was very popular allthough there where complaints about rigged elections and from the beginning of the 80s he had difficulties ensuring the positive connection to the world market and dealing with the orthodox Islamitic political movement. In the last years of Bourguiba’s rule his health detoriated and in a smooth and unique ‘coupe d’état médicale’, his prime minister Ben Ali forced him to resign on November 7, 1987. He died in 1997 and was put to rest under the central dome.
When I took this photo in 1993, Bourguiba's parents and first wife were entered in the mausoleum.
The tech: Scanned with the EpsonPerfection 2450 photo. PCS3 work flow: I altered the saturation, contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, using different layers, enhanced the edges, ran the noise filter on the sky USM-ed (a 5 step method), added a frame and resized and did a gentle USM (1,1px, 22%) again.

Salaam Bert,
Many people have their holiday in Tunisia but we see surprisingly few photos on TE, so it's nice that you post some, for a scan it is very crisp and detail so it means your workflow must be right, without the provided data I couldn't tell it's a scan. I also note the fall light contributes buch better to lighting your subject than the hard summer one, and last but not least I like this 1001 nights architecture, must look nice at night too I guess.
Have a nice day JY

Hallo Bert,

Hi Bert
This looks like a postcard showing a very pure image without tourists. The symmetry shows off the pretty building so well against a perfect blue sky. The colours are so attractive.

Hello Bert,
The symmetry in composition is attractive, so are the pin sharp details in the architecture!
The side light works well to create this 3-D effect, also rendering great colours...
Greetings,
Pablo -
