Volos has a very big fishing fleet. The fleet does it’s thing at night . Each boat has it’s own gas lighting system on board. The big ones have a extensive arrays of it. When returning to port early in the morning much of the cargo of the big ships goes directly to distributors, the fish auction in Piraeus, the canning factory in the Industrial area of Volos or the local fish market.

The smaller vessels, one of which is potrayed here while the proprietor is gutting a fish , sells mostly directly to customer who come to the quay. So most small boats are equipped with cold storage, scales etc to serve as vending station. When the boats arrive with some special fish you can see large queues forming.
The average length of a small coastal fishing vessel in this e area is 11 meters. Usually, it caries an engine powered with some 100 hp with a capacity of 15-18 GRT. The business are mostly family owned one boat operations.

Fishery remains a vital economic and social activity in many coastal areas in Greece. However, the implementation of new technology in the sector over the years has led to overcapitalization (fishing fleet enhancement, increase in vessel capacity, new catch technologies) affecting the fish population. Inevitably, unemployment and income decrease drove many fishermen to job alteration and often also to migration. Nevertheless, an expanding aquaculture industry offered new job opportunities.
