Papa Alessandro VII Chigi dimorò a lungo ad Ariccia e a lui si deve la radicale trasformazione urbanistica del borgo avvenuta con l'opera di Bernini attraverso la costruzione della Chiesa dell'Assunta e della piazza che fronteggia il Palazzo Chigi.
I lavori per la nuova chiesa collegiata di Ariccia iniziarono nel 1662, Bernini si servì della collaborazione di Carlo Fontana, uno dei suoi migliori allievi. L'idea progettuale del Bernini fu ispirata dalla struttura architettonica del Pantheon, la cui pianta circolare si ritrova nella chiesa ariccina. La chiesa fu consacrata il 16 maggio 1664 con la messa celebrata dallo stesso Alessandro VII. A fiancheggiare la chiesa, due edifici denominati Casino del Governatore e Casino del Ministro (1662-1664) che si collegano alla chiesa attraverso una teatrale esedra che abbraccia la chiesa nella parte retrostante.
L'edificazione dei casini laterali all'Assunta fu portata avanti contemporaneamente ad essa e con grande velocità, perché in uno dovevano essere collocate le Carceri in cui si amministrava la giustizia.
