Happy New Year to everyone!

My New Year resolution is to lose ten pounds! Since that won't happen I better have a back-up plan. The back-up plan is to finish posting pics from this last year so I can begin to start posting photos that I have taken with my new 40D.

So here we begin:

This photo was part of my South Plains Fair episode. I was experimenting with motion blur here. Next year I'll work on panning!

Cheers,

Mel

P.S. You can't expect the best equipment at a carnival and on this ride all the little lights on the sign were out. I created a blank overlay layer and filled it with 50% gray. Used my white paintbrush and went over each light. Made it look like they were all on! Maybe that's cheating a bit but it really helped the photo in my opinion. Try it out sometime it works really well.

Hello Mel! Plan B sounds better to me :) I gave up smoking in May 2007 and I am still strong - and a little proud too! The Europeans still smoke like chimneys but we are getting better with each year and this makes things easier if you want to stop. Cool little action shot of yours and it suits the Season somehow, to celebrate and get a little crazy with all the Festivities, but I do hope that I will not only go in circles in 2008 but that I get some plans finalized :) Happy New Year to you too, Barbara.

Hi Mel,
Happy new year my friend...and enjoy life and forget those extra pounds ;-)
Never tell others what you have done, keep your hidden photoshop secrets for your self.
Great action shot with good movement and good work on the lights. Also at night this must be an interesting object to photograpgh...very nice.
Regards, henk

Hello Mel,
Your experimentation worked very well for you with this photo. Your blur effect is very subtle and looks very realistic. Try taking some long exposure nightime shots of this carnival sometime. These photos are great fun to experiment with. Wishing you a great New Year as well!
Stan

Hello Mel,

Good to visit some of your photos again. This one is an amazing piece; I really enjoy the fairground atmosphere. The Royal Show visits my town every year in August, and about 700,000 people visit. I have not been for a few years now so it is worth a visit in 08. The 1/40 was a great choice of exposure, just enough to get some effective motion blur, and not too long to burn out any portions of the photo. The frame is very eye catching. I have enjoyed this carnival series!

Matt

Hey Mel, what's up man? eventually you posted this shot. Very nice one. I am really envious with your nice wideangle red-ring lens. You can stand there and cover all of the thinngs. The motion blur on the BG is really nice. The colors are also good. Well done. Sothy

PS: I think you still love your 400D ;-)

Happy New Year to you and yours

HI Mel,
Do I read some kind of upgrade took place ??? Congratulations and bring them on the 40D pictures !
The motion/motionless opposition works already here but is still a bit shy imho, screwing a ND filter would help I think, but it's a nice picture already.
Happy New Year !
JY

I had to laugh at your note. Do you have a back-up for the back-up? After panning in 2008 then what? ;D
Interesting shot of the orbiter. The majority is so sharp yet I would have expected more motion blur of the ride itself. The fairground makes an excellent venue for photography; something I should bear in mind.
Good series
Kath

Hello Mel,
Excellent action shot. Like the blur motion that you have captured. I don't think a cheating .... most of the 'pros' usually modify their pictures in some way. That is why Photoshop tools are available :) :)
Excellent note and please keep sharing your
secrets. :)
Congratulations.

Hey Mel: Nice motion blur mixed with nice, crisp motionless elements and color. Good note about the Photoshopping as well and it was good info. I've lost about 27 pounds since the end of August and my method was very basic: counted calories (took in 1000-1200 per day) plus lots of power walking equaled steady weight loss. I went from 185 to 158. Happy New Year..........Greg

Hey, Mel,
this is such a cool shot. I love how the name of the ride is so distinct with the actual ride being blurred that way. The detail is so good you can read the warning sign. You did a GREAT job with those lights, too. That is amazing. Many thanks and best wishes for the coming year!!
Shelly

Hello Mel,

The new equipment really works well. I do like the image and the framing you created around it. The tweaking of the lights is good I think but what strikes me the most of the tridimensional effect created by the moving baskets. You attained good exposure. Thanks Mel :-)
