[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Vilas County is a rugged stretch of heavily forested land in extreme Northern Wisconsin, running alongside the Upper Michigan border. The county holds over 1,300 lakes of varying size, but only 20,000 people (although summer months see huge influxes of southern vacationers flocking to the lakes). Winters are bitterly cold and usually quiet, aside from hunters and the occasional snowmobile. My family has owned land in this area since the late 1950s, and various relatives still make the 4-hour drive "Up North" throughout the year. This photograph was taken along a small sandy road overlooking the large lake of Presque Isle, home to several loon families, walleye, and the muskellunge, a sought-after game fish.
